Preterm Infant Birth in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: Fathers' Experience

Abstract:

Studie podává přehled o způsobu vnímání a prožívání otců situace předčasného narození jejich dítěte po dobu, co je dítě hospitalizováno na neonatologické jednotce intenzivní péče. Zaměřuje se také na potřeby otců a možnosti, jakými může zdravotnický personál rodiče podpořit. Podkladem pro analýzu byly nestrukturované rozhovory s otevřenými otázkami provedené se sedmi otci předčasně narozených dětí v období, kdy měli děti stále hospitalizované na jednotce intenzivní péče. Výsledky analýzy jsou prezentovány ve třech hlavních kapitolách a za použití domácích i zahraničních výzkumů průběžně diskutovány. Otcové nedonošených dětí v prvních dnech a týdnech po porodu jejich dítěte bojují se směsicí pocitů štěstí, pýchy, radosti, nejistoty a obav o život a zdraví svých dětí, i o svou vlastní budoucnost. Vykazují především potřebu informací o zdravotním stavu a prognózách jejich dítěte, potřebu psychosociální podpory a kontroly nad situací. Ačkoli byla nalezena řada pozitivních aspektů v přístupu lékařů a zdravotních sester k rodičům, studie ukazuje prázdná místa v systému péče o rodiče v této stresující situaci.

Abstract:

Presented paper gives an overview of how fathers perceive the situation of the preterm birth of their infant during the time of their infant’s hospitalization in the neonatal intensive care unit. Seven unstructured interviews served as a baseline for an analysis. Results from the analysis are presented in three main chapters and are permanently discussed with the use of Czech and foreign researches. During the first days and weeks after birth of their preterm infants fathers strive with various feelings such as happiness, pride, joy, uncertainty and fears for live and heatlh of their children and also for their own future. Primarily, they show need for informations about their child’s health state and about future prognosis, need for psycho-social support and need for control. Even though there were found a lot of positive aspects in the approach of the medical personnel towards the parents, the study shows certain insufficiencies in the system of care provided to the parents in such stressful situation.
