The Role of Delilah from ‘Samson and Delilah‘ and Its Interpretation

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce „Role Dalily z opery Samson a Dalila a její interpretace“ pojednává o mezzosopránové roli Dalily, ústřední ženské postavě, z opery francouzského skladatele Camilla Saint-Saënse. Práce přináší stručný životopis autora opery, podrobnosti vzniku díla a jeho uvedení v zahraničí i v českých zemích. Zaměřuje se na roli Dalily z hlediska charakteru, pěveckého partu a interpretace jejich tří árií. Práce také přináší čtyři rozhovory se zpěvačkami, které roli již interpretovaly. Jsou jimi americké mezzosopranistky Denyce Graves a J’Nai Bridges a české zpěvačky Veronika Hajnová a Šárka Hrbáčková. Bakalářská práce shromažďuje dostupné informace, které budou užitečné pro budoucí interpretky při studiu a interpretaci této role. Příloha obsahuje notový zápis árií, texty árií s českým překladem a rozhovory se zahraničními interpretkami v anglickém jazyce.

Abstract:

The bachelor's thesis "The Role of Delilah from ‘Samson and Delilah‘ and Its Interpretation" deals with the mezzo-soprano role of Dalila, the main female character, from the opera by the French composer Camille Saint-Saëns. The work provides a brief biography of the author of the opera, the details of the work and the performances abroad and in the Czech lands. It focuses on the role of Dalila in terms of character, singing and interpretation of her three arias. The work also provides four interviews with the singers who have already sung the role – American mezzo-sopranos Denyce Graves and J’Nai Bridges and Czech singers Veronika Hajnová and Šárka Hrbáčková. The bachelor‘s thesis gathers the available information which will be useful for future singers in the process of studying and interpreting this role. The appendix contains the notation of the three arias, the texts of the arias with a Czech translation and the interviews with the foreign singers in English.
