Madness in Der Sandmann by E. T. A. Hoffmann and The Grandmother by Božena Němcová

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with literary depiction of madness in the work The Sandman (Der Sandmann, 1816) by E. T. A. Hoffmann and the work The Grandmother (Babička, 1855) by Božena Němcová. In Babička the story of Viktorka is analysed. In particular, the motivations of both authors are explored for presenting characters who either suffer from madness, whose beginning can be traced back to a childhood trauma caused by the fairy-tale character Sandmann (Nathanael's story), or who suffer a sudden and undefined loss of sanity, framed by a romantic notion of unhappy love (Viktorka's story). Both texts are examined as insights into the morbidity/vulnerability of the individual soul in a contemporary context and in terms of literary treatments of madness. The gender aspect and how madness was portrayed in literature for men and women is also taken into account. It is furthermore formulated whether, and to what extent, the portrayal of madness in both works is dependent on the contemporary understanding of the disease and the contemporary depiction, or whether more emphasis is placed on the author's statement.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá literárním zobrazením šílenství v díle Pískař (Der Sandmann, 1816) E. T. A. Hoffmanna a Babička (1855) Boženy Němcové. V Babičce je analyzován příběh Viktorky. Zkoumána je především motivace obou autorů pro představení hrdinů, kteří buď trpí šílenstvím, jehož počátkem je do dětství vysledovatelné trauma způsobené pohádkovou postavou Sandmann (Nathanaelův příběh), nebo u nich dojde k náhlé a neurčené ztrátě rozumu, která je rámovaná romantickou představou o nešťastné lásce (Viktorky příběh). Oba texty jsou zkoumány jak jako náhledy do chorobnosti/zranitelnosti duše individua v dobovém kontextu, tak z hlediska literárního zpracování šílenství. Zohledněn je přitom i genderový aspekt a jak bylo šílenství v literatuře vyobrazováno u mužů a žen. Zformulováno je i to, zda a do jaké míry je v obou dílech obraz šílenství závislý na dobovém chápání nemoci a dobovém zobrazení, či zda je větší důraz kladen na autorskou výpověď.
