Molecular Technologies in Newborn Screening

Abstract:

Laboratory newborn screening is considered a massive success in modern healthcare, and today, it is considered a standard of patient care in developed countries. In more than 50 years, it has undergone development both in terms of technology and content. Similar progress can also be observed in the field of molecular genetic technologies. As the reliability and speed of the methods improved, their cost gradually decreased. Incorporating molecular genetics methods into newborn screening represented a natural step in the development of this system. This work summarizes the current procedures used in newborn screening in the Czech Republic. It compares them with new available methods that have the potential to be incorporated into the system. Special attention is paid to cystic fibrosis, the early detection of which is at least partially based on DNA analysis and was the first one included in the set of diseases detected by newborn screening in the Czech Republic.

Abstract:

Laboratorní novorozenecký screening je považovaný za obrovský úspěch novodobého zdravotnictví a dnes je považovaný za standard péče o pacienta ve vyspělých zemích. Za víc jak 50 let přešel rozvojem tak po technologické i obsahové stránce. Podobný pokrok je možné sledovat i v oblasti molekulárně genetických technologií. Se zlepšenou spolehlivostí a rychlostí metod se postupně snižovala i jejich cena. Začlenění metod molekulární genetiky do novorozeneckého screeningu představoval přirozený krok ve vývoji tohoto systému. Tato práce shrnuje aktuální postupy využívané v novorozeneckém screeningu v České Republice a porovnává je s novými dostupnými metodami, které mají potenciál být do systému začleněny. Zvláštní zřetel je kladen na nemoc cystická fibróza, jejíž včasný záchyt je alespoň částečně založen na vyšetření DNA a jako první se stala součástí souboru nemocí vyšetřovaných v rámci novorozeneckého screeningu v ČR.
