Neurophysiological processes and Musical Consciousness in Mozart effect's Study

Abstract:

29 vysokoškolských studentů technické univerzity bylo rozděleno do dvou souborů. První byl vystaven poslechu Mozartovy sonáty K448, druhý tichu. V průběhu expozice auditivních podnětů bylo zkoumaným osobám snímáno EEG, bezprostředně po expozici následovalo řešení testu prostorových schopností PFC. I přes to, že Mozartův efekt nebyl potvrzen, byly mezi skupinami během prvních pěti minut řešení testu PFC zjištěny signifikantní rozdíly v celkové síle EEG aktivity ve frekvenčních pásmech alfa, beta i theta. Síla korové odezvy byla u skupiny s expozicí ticha ve všech frekvenčních pásmech EEG v záporné korelaci s věkem a délkou hudební zkušenosti. Korová aktivita u skupiny s expozicí sonáty vykazovala pozitivní korelaci s výkonem v testu prostorových schopností, časem řešení testu a arousalem. Signifikantní rozdíly mezi zkoumanými soubory v síle korové aktivity ve všech frekvenčních pásmech EEG jsou interpretovány v kontextu dlouhodobé hudební zkušenosti probandů a emoční reakce na hudební podněty.

Abstract:

During the research, 29 students of Brno University of Technology were divided into 2 test groups. One group was exposed to the reproduction of Mozart’s sonata K448, the other group to silence. EEG activity was recorded of the tested individuals during the exposition to auditive stimuli, and immediately after the end of the exposure they were subjected to the PFC test on spatial skills. Even though the Mozart’s effect was not confirmed, significant differences were discovered between the test groups during the first five minutes of the PFC test in the overall strength/intensity of EEG activity on alpha, beta and theta frequencies. The strength/intensity of (cerebral) cortex response in the test group exposed to silence was on all frequencies in negative correlation with age and length of musical experience. The cortex activity in the test group exposed to Mozart showed positive correlation with their performance in the spatial skills test, with the time needed for the completion of the test and with arousal (level). The significant differences in the cortex activity strength on all EEG frequencies between the test groups have been interpreted in the context of long-term musical experience of the probands and their emotional reaction to musical stimuli/input.
