Role of a Small State in Multilateral Diplomacy: The Case of Estonia in the Context of Russian Aggression Against Ukraine

Abstract:

Ruská invaze na Ukrajinu v roce 2022 dramaticky změnila dosavadní geopolitické nastavení mezinárodního systému a ohrozila dlouholetý mír v Evropě. Zemím střední a východní Evropy, které byly součástí Sovětského svazu, byla připomenuta vlastní traumatizující zkušenost s Ruskou velmocí. Z toho důvodu byly nuceny prosazovat tvrdý a koordinovaný postoj vůči Ruské federaci. Mezi nejhlasitější kritiky a zároveň nejvýraznější podporovatele Ukrajiny patří, navzdory své velikosti, Estonsko, v čele s premiérkou Kajou Kallas, která někdy bývá označována jako nová Železná lady. Hlavním cílem práce je prokázat skrze narativní analýzu, že Estonsko v době ruské agrese odporuje předpokladům chování malého státu a zamýšlí se nad relevancí kategorizace malých států.

Abstract:

The Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 dramatically changed the existing geopolitical setting of the international system and endangered several decades-long peace prevailing in Europe. The countries of Central and Eastern Europe, which were part of the Soviet Union, were reminded of their own traumatising experience with the Russian super-power and, therefore, were forced to promote hard and coordinated actions against the Russian Federation. Amongst the loudest critics and, at the same time, the biggest supporters of Ukraine, belonged despite its size Estonia, whose prime minister, Kaja Kallas, is sometimes described as the new Iron Lady. The main aim of the thesis is on the case of Estonia and, through the means of narrative analysis, to demonstrate that in the times of Russian aggression, Estonia contradicts the assumptions of small state behaviour and, therefore, questions the relevance of categorisation of small states.
