Self-concept of the intellectually gifted learners

Abstract:

Tato práce si klade za cíl prozkoumat vztah mezi nadáním a sebepojetím školní úspěšnosti. Cílem teoretické části je analyzovat pojmy nadání, inteligence a sebepojetí. Cílem výzkumné části je porovnat žáky ze specializované třídy pro nadané se dvěma kontrolními skupinami žáků z běžných tříd. Dále si klademe za úkol zjistit, zda-li se liší školní sebepojetí mezi chlapci a děvčaty. Jako metoda zjišťování úrovně školního sebepojetí byl zvolen Dotazník sebepojetí školní úspěšnosti dětí (SPAS) od autorů Matějčka a Vágnerové. Třídu nadaných žáků jsme srovnávali se dvěma kontrolními skupinami nejen v oblasti celkového školního sebepojetí, ale také na jednotlivých subškálách (Obecné schopnosti, Matematika, Čtení, Pravopis, Psaní, Sebedůvěra). Na stejných subškálách jsme srovnávali i dívky a chlapce. Rozdíl mezi skupinou nadaných a jednou z kontrolních skupin se projevil pouze na škále Matematika, kde se kontrolní skupina hodnotila lépe, než skupina nadaných. Mezi skupinou nadaných a druhou kontrolní skupinou se neprojevil žádný statisticky významný rozdíl. Rozdíl mezi chlapci a dívkami se projevil na škále Psaní, kde dívky dosáhly vyšší úrovně sebepojetí.

Abstract:

This thesis seeks to investigate the links between giftedness and academic self-concept. The goal of the theoretical part is to analyze the concept of giftedness, intelligence, and self-concept. In the practical part, we compare pupils attending a school class specially created for intellectually gifted pupils and two control groups composed of participants from ordinary school classes. Our next goal is to find out whether there is a difference in the self-concept of boys and girls. The method used to identify the level of academic self-concept Student's Perception Ability Scale (SPAS) revised by Matějček and Vágnerová. We compared the class composed of gifted pupils and two control groups not only in the level of overall self-concept but also in the individual subscales/factors (General Abilities, Maths, Reading, Orthography, Writing, Confidence). We used the same subscales to compare the self-concept in boys and girls. A statistically significant difference was discovered only in the Math factor where one of the control group scaled higher than the gifted pupils. There was no significant difference between the second control group and the gifted group. Boys and girls scored significantly differently on the scale of Writing where girls reached a higher score.
