Position of Slovakia in the EU in the context of dependency theory

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is about the position of Slovakia in the European Union (the EU), mainly in the economic domain and the domain of foreign policy. The thesis is in the same time embedded into the context of the marxist „dependency theory“, which describes the exploitage of the weaker countries by stronger ones. The theory was created on the ground of the data and information from Latin America and that is why the transportability into the European area throught instrumental case study could be beneficial. The thesis has mixed research design and uses simultaneously qualitative and quantitative elements of the research. The author analyses various macroeconomic and microeconomic indicators that maybe relate with the possible dependency of Slovakia as an economy, caused by European integration and advancement in the past that directed to it. The advancement of the indicators in time is accented. A concrete examples of the dependency of the economy of Slovakia on the automotive industry make a part of the work as well. The work is in the context of the current mainstream view of the EU relatively critical.

Abstract:

Predmetná diplomová práca sa zaoberá pozíciou Slovenska v Európskej únii a to najmä v hospodárskej a zahranično-politickej oblasti. Práca je zároveň vsadená do kontextu teórie závislosti, čo je marxistická teória fakticky vysvetľujúca vykorisťovanie slabších krajín silnejšími. Teória vznikla na základe dát z Južnej Ameriky a preto by mohlo byť zistenie jej prenositeľnosti do európskeho prostredia pomocou inštrumentálnej prípadovej štúdie prínosom. Práca nesie zmiešaný výskumný design a využíva tak ako kvalitatívne, tak aj kvantitatívne prvky výskumu. V súvislosti s teóriou závislosti autor posudzuje rôzne makroekonomické a mikroekonomické ukazovatele, ktoré by mohli súvisieť s možnou (aj neželanou) závislosťou slovenskej ekonomiky, spôsobenou európskou integráciou a predchádzajúcim vývojom, ktorý k nej smeroval. Vývoj ukazovateľov v čase v práci rozhodne nie je v úzadí. V práci sú uvedené aj konkrétne príklady závislosti slovenskej ekonomiky na automobilovom priemysle. Práca je vo vzťahu k súčasnému pohľadu Únie písaná skôr z kritickej pozície.
