The Geopolitics of Japan and Strategic Effects of Emergent Asia

Abstract:

The dissertation thesis is devoted to an analysis of geopolitics of Japan in Asia. The chapter one presents a theoretical framework on geopolitics and critical geopolitics, geo-economics and regional security complexes. The chapter two proceeds to an analysis of classic Japanese geopolitics, surveying geopolitical discourse from the imperial period of Japan in Asia (1868-1945) by a critical geopolitical approach. The chapter three explores a discourse on ?economic miracle? from the re-emergence of Japanese postwar influence in Asia with a focus on American factors in transforming geopolitics of Japan. The chapter four deals with emergent Asia of the 21st century that, space of dynamically developing Asia with complex security-strategic overlap. As a result there were reforms in economic and security sectors put in force, addressing Chinese re-emergence in Asia and growing pressure from Asian economic competition. Chapter five provides an overview of effects of economic and security processes in Asia on creation of governmental policies in Japan (2012-2015), and briefly describes selected trends of strategic orientation of Japan in Asia. The chapter six points out political geography of selected Japanese bilateral relations in concerned parts of Asia, under influence of the factor USA. A historical context along with geopolitical perspectives of Japanese relations in Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia and South Asia are characterized in brief. Japan has become an object of strategic transformation in complex processes from emergent Asia. This transformation of geopolitics of Japan has been affected by modernity and volatility from globalized Asia. It is defined by converging politics of prosperity and security with stabilizing effects on these externalities.

Abstract:

Dizertačná práca je venovaná geopolitike Japonska v Ázii. Kapitola prvá predstavuje teoretický rámec o geopolitike a kritickej geopolitike, geoekonomike a teórie sekuritizácie a regionálnych bezpečnostných komplexov. Kapitola dva je analýzou japonskej klasickej geopolitiky z imperiálneho obdobia v Ázii (1868-1945), prístupom kritickej geopolitiky. Kapitola tri uvádza diskurz o "ekonomickom zázraku" vo vzťahu k re-emergencii povojnového japonského vplyvu v Ázii, s akcentovaním amerického faktoru v transformujúcej sa geopolitike Japonska do oblasti geoekonomickej. Kapitola štyri charakterizuje vybrané procesy emergentnej Ázie 21. storočia, dynamickej časti rozvojovej Ázie s komplexným bezpečnostno-strategickým presahom. Čínska re-emergencia v Ázii, a tlak rastúcej ekonomickej konkurencie viedli k vládnej reforme ekonomického a bezpečnostného sektoru Japonska do 21. storočia. Kapitola päť vymedzuje vplyv účinkov ekonomických a bezpečnostných procesov na tvorbu vládnej politiky v Japonsku (2012-2015), a špecifikuje vybrané trendy strategickej orientácie Japonska v Ázii. Kapitola šesť približuje politickú geografiu vybraných japonských bilaterálnych vzťahov v predmetnej časti Ázie, vrátane faktoru USA. Reflektuje geopolitické a geoekonomické perspektívy japonských vzťahov v Severovýchodnej, Juhovýchodnej a Južnej Ázii. Geopolitika Japonska je objektom strategickej transformácie danej postmodernitou, nestálosťou, i nepredvídateľnosťou tlakov z globalizovanej Ázie. Je charakteristická konvergujúcimi politikami prosperity a obrany so stabilizačnými účinkami na externality.
