Social Network as Grey Media: Analysis of Cyberactivist Communication Based on Example of “Arab Spring”

Abstract:

Práce Sociální síť jako šedé médium: Analýza komunikace kyberaktivismu na příkladu „arabského jara“ se zabývá především stratagematy na úrovni jazyka komunikace a obsahu vyjádření. Fuller s Goeffeym vidí ve zlých médiích prostředí, jež operuje mimo tradiční dichotomii dobra a zla, jež se straní naší pozornosti a praktikuje svou agendu bez ohledu na aktivitu uživatele. Řadí sem expertní systémy, databáze, software pro kolektivní spolupráci apod. Sociální sítě, fenomén posledních let, jsou na jednu stranu otevřené každému, na stranu druhou však nikomu neumožňují nahlédnout pod povrch a zjistit, jakým způsobem se svěřenými daty nakládají – právě zde nastupuje ona šedost. Šedá média jsou všudypřítomná a nenápadná a skrývají se za GUI našich monitorů. Právě odsunutí kategorií dobra a zla spojuje zlá média se sofisty, pro něž pro dosažení vlastního cíle, tedy výhry, rovněž nehrála rozhodující roli hranice mezi pravdou a lží, dobrem a zlem. Na tomto filozofickém základě je potom přijatelné, aby lidem byla poskytnuta platforma na jednu stranu se tvářící jednoduše a transparentně (vyžadující nazpět totéž od uživatele odvolávajíc se navíc přitom právě na dobro a „správnost“), na stranu druhou protkaná nepřehlednou skrumáží algoritmů. Médium si na základě vnějších tlaků prostřednictvím kódu vytváří vlastní agendu, která sleduje množinu cílů, přičemž jeho komplexní mechanismy skrývá pod závojem zdánlivě jednoduché srozumitelnosti, často se přitom odkazuje právě na termíny, jakými jsou bezpečnost, komfort a transparentnost, z nichž se však v širším kontextu stávají podružné a prázdné pojmy. Optikou studia zlých médií a další literatury zkoumající programovaná média kritickým pohledem práce analyzuje konkrétní komunikační situace v rámci tzv. „arabského jara“, hledá projevy strata-gematického chování a také analyzuje komunikační strategie jak ze strany uživatele, tak ze strany média.

Abstract:

Thesis Social Network as Grey Media: Analysis of Cyberactivist Communication Based on Example of “Arab Spring” explores stratagems on the level of communication language and content of expression. Fuller and Goeffey consider evil media as an environment operating outside of conventional dichotomy of “good“ and “evil“, which avoids our attention and applies its agenda regardless the user’s activity. They talk about expert systems, databases, software for collaborative work etc. Social network, a phenomenon of last couple of years, is on the one hand open to anyone, on the other it does not allow to access the area “under the surface“ and find out how it really works with gained data – this is where the greyness lays. Grey media are everywhere and still hardly recognizable – they hide behind GUI of our monitors. Refusing categories of “good“ and “evil“ connects evil media with Sophists, for whom, while accomplishing their goals (winning), the border between truth and lie or good and evil did not play a major role neither. On this philosophical basis, it is acceptable to provide people with a platform that appears to be simple and transparent (asking the user to act the same) but in fact is rather complex, full of codes and algorithms. Based on outside influence, the medium creates its own agenda which follows several goals while hiding the actual mechanisms under the sheet of seeming clarity, referring to the terms such as “safety“, “comfort“ and “transparency“, which therefore become mere empty, meaningless words. From the point of view of Evil Media Studies and additional literature (which examines programmed media critically) the thesis analyzes particular examples during “Arab Spring“, searches for stratagemic behavior, and also analyzes communication strategies both from user and from media side.
