Reflections of the Munich Treaty in American foreign policy

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je analyzovat dopad Mnichovského a Vietnamského paradigmatu ve zkoumaném období na tvorbě zahraniční politiky Spojených států amerických. V práci se postupuje poněkud nestandardně, zaměření je na perspektivu teorie kulturního traumatu. Jinými slovy vychází se z předpokladu, že Mnichovská konference znamenala pro Spojené státy trauma, které se přeneslo do poválečné zahraniční politiky a svým specifickým způsobem také do kulturní reprodukce. I když se Spojené státy americké konference v Mnichově neúčastnily, měla konference na tvorbu jejich zahraniční politiky zásadní vliv. Spojené státy americké musely hned po konci druhé světové války čelit zvětšování vlivu Sovětského svazu. Takto chápaný odkaz meziválečného vývoje - tedy toho, co bývá některými označováno jako "paradigma Mnichova" - se podepsal i na americké kulturní tvorbě. I v této oblasti můžeme zaznamenat knihy, divadelní hry, básně a také filmy, které vybízejí aktéry k boji se zlem a neustupování zlu a boji za vznešené právní ideály.

Abstract:

The aim of this work is to analyze the impact of the Munich and Vietnam paradigms in the period under study on the formation of foreign policy in the United States. The work proceeds somewhat non-standardly, the focus is on the perspective of the theory of cultural trauma. In other words, it is assumed that the Munich Conference was a trauma for the United States, which was translated into post-war foreign policy and, in a specific way, into cultural reproduction. Although the United States did not attend the Munich Conference, the Conference had a major impact on its foreign policy-making. The United States had to face the growing influence of the Soviet Union right after the end of World War II. The legacy of interwar development understood in this way - that is, what is often referred to by some as the "Munich paradigm" - was also reflected in American cultural production. In this area, too, we can see books, plays, poems and also films that encourage actors to fight evil and not give in to evil and to fight for noble legal ideals.
