Luminescence Study of the Aromatic Compounds in the Solid Solutions

Abstract:

V poslední době je velký zájem o studie tvorby ledu a disociace molekul, které se v něm při tomto procesu zachytily. Excimery, molekulární asociáty v excitovaném stavu, by mohly být použity jako molekulární sonda na sledování těchto procesů, protože jejich fluorescence je odlišná od fluorescence odpovídajících monomerů. V této práci je rozebráno možné použití excimeru anthracenu (jako produktu fotolýzy dianthracenu ve ztuhlých roztocích) pro tyto účely. Z anthracenu byl ozářením (320 - 380 nm) připraven dianthracen, který pak byl zmražen (při 77 K) a ozářen (272 nm při 77 K) za účelem rozpadu zpět na dvě molekuly anthracenu. Pomocí tohoto postupu zůstanou molekuly anthracenu blízko u sebe, což umožňuje měření anthracenového excimeru. Byla pozorována změna fluorescenčního spektra se zvyšující se teplotou, přičemž po roztání rozpouštědla (147 K) excimery zmizely. V této práci byl zmíněný postup aplikovaný na anthracen i 9 anthracenkarboxaldehyd a jejich excimery v methylcyklohexanu. V obou případech bylo úspěšné jednom jedno měření a ve vodě/ledu nebyl úspěšně naměřen excimer ani jedné z látek kvůli nízké rozpustnosti jejich fotodimeru (přestože byly roztoky zahřívány, míchány nebo vloženy do ultrazvuku). To naznačuje, že anthracenové excimery vzniklé jako produkt fotolýzy dianthracene nejsou vhodnou molekulární sondou na sledování disociace molekul v průběhu tání ledu.

Abstract:

The study of ice formation and dissociation of molecules trapped in it has been of interest in the recent years. Excimers, molecular associates in the excited state, could be used as a molecular probe to observe these processes, as their fluorescence is different from their monomer counterparts. In this thesis, the possible use of anthracene excimer (as a product of dianthracene photolysis in frozen solutions) for this purpose was investigated. Dianthracene was synthesized from anthracene by irradiation (with wavelengths 320 380 nm), after which it was frozen (at 77 K) and irradiated again (272 nm at 77 K), to revert it back to two molecules of anthracene. Thanks to this process, the two molecules stay trapped close to one another, allowing anthracene excimers to be measured. The change in fluorescence spectrum with rising temperature was observed, with excimers disappearing above melting temperature of the solvent (147 K). In this thesis, this process was applied to both anthracene and 9-anthracenecarboxaldehyde and both their excimers in methylcyclohexane. Only one successful measurement was made for both molecules and no successful measurements in water/ice were made, due to low solubility of the photodimers (despite heating, stirring or using ultrasound). This suggest that anthracene excimers as a product of dianthracene photolysis are not a suitable molecular probe to follow dissociation of molecules during thawing of ice.
