Děje uvnitř buněk mohou být řízeny geny, jejíž vzájemné ovlivňování vytváří komplexní genetickou regulační síť (GRS). I přes zlepšující se chápání struktury a funkce jednotlivých genů, proteinů a ostatních buněčných komponent, stále zůstává neobjasněno chování celku vyvstávající ze vzájemné interakce jednotlivých částí.
