La noche de Tlatelolco by Elena Poniatowska: the author’s discursive strategies and her role in characterization of characters in the book as historical and literary characters

Abstract:

Discontent with politics and inspiration by protests from all around the world led to Mexican students’ uprising, which culminated on the 2nd of October 1968 with repression by then government and President Gustavo Díaz Ordaz. La noche de Tlatelolco by Elena Poniatowska contains testimonies of those who either passively or actively took part in the uprising and were unable to publicly voice their opinion. This work not only describes the historical context of the students’ uprising in Mexico during 1968, but also deals with the role of the author in her work and strategies, which the author uses. Using analysis of these strategies and selected characters, this work aims to observe, whether the characters in La Noche de Tlatelolco are historical and literary characters at the same time.

Nespokojnosť s politickým dianím a inšpirácia vo vzniknutých protestoch po celom svete, okrem iného, viedli mexických študentov k povstaniu, ktoré 2. októbra 1968 skončilo represiou zo strany vtedajšej vlády a prezidenta Gustava Díaza Ordaza. La noche de Tlatelolco od Eleny Poniatowskej sa skladá zo svedectiev tých, ktorí sa, či už aktívne alebo pasívne, podieľali na študentskom povstaní a doposiaľ nemali možnosť verejne prejaviť svoj názor. Táto práca, okrem priblíženia historického kontextu študentského povstania v Mexiku v roku 1968, sa zaoberá úlohou autorky v diele a stratégiami, ktoré autorka používa. Jej cieľom je, prostredníctvom analýzy týchto stratégií a analýzy vybraných postáv, pozorovať, či postavy vystupujúce v knihe La noche de Tlatelolco sú postavy historické a zároveň aj literárne.
