John Woodroffe and the establishment of serious research of tantra in the context of colonial discourse about magic and superstition: On the policy of academic study of religion

Abstract:

Od 18. století se misionáři a orientalisté setkávají na území Indie (nejen) s tantrickou tradicí. Cizí tradice jsou europocentricky hodnoceny a samotná tantra se nezdá být na základě osvícenských představ legitimní oblastí bádání. Klíčovou roli zde sehrával pojem magie, s nímž byla asociována, jelikož magie představovala v kontextu viktoriánské morálky stigma spojené s pověrou, sexuálními orgiemi a individuální nekonformitou. Na počátku 20. století ale pojem na základě stoupající popularity okultismu v Evropě začal měnit své konotace a zdá se, že to bylo také důvodem, proč se tantra mohla postupně stát předmětem soudobého bádání. Důležitou roli v tom sehrál John Woodroffe, britský orientalista, tantrik a obránce Indie působící v Kolkatě. Cílem projektu je prozkoumat, na co navazují diskuze o tantře ve vztahu k osvícenským kořenům orientalistického bádání o indických náboženstvích. Mě pak zajímá, jaké je kulturně-historické pozadí chápání pojmu magie jako určité hodnotící kategorie při styku s jinými kulturami a na základě čeho mohlo jeho uplatnění vést k systematickému vylučování jistých jevů z oblasti seriózního bádání. Hlavními prameny pro diplomovou práci mi jsou díla Woodroffa – Arhura Avalona, na jehož případě chci ve vztahu k výše zmíněným otázkám ukázat, proč se tantra stala relevantní pro seriózní bádání a jak se na západě etablovala. V čem vlastně spočívá novost diskurzu, se kterým Woodroffe přišel a co nám říká o povaze moderního studia náboženství a o politice moderního studia cizích kultur obecně?

Abstract:

Since the 18th-century, missionaries and orientalists in India were encountering (not just) the tantric tradition. These traditions were europocentrically judged and tantrism was not seen, based on the enlightenment imagination, as a valuable field of study. The notion of magic had been playing a key role. Tantra was associated with this notion and magic was connected within the context of Victorian morality with superstition, sexual orgies and individual nonconformity. However, at the beginning of the 20th-century, the notion of magic, due to increasing popularity of occultism in Europe, began to change its connotations, and it seems that it was also the reason why tantra could successively become the subject of contemporary research. John Woodroffe, the British orientalist, tantric and defender of India, who operated in Kolkata, was a key actor within this process. The thesis aims to investigate how was the discourse on tantra informed by enlightenment roots of orientalist‘s research about Indian religions. My focus is the cultural-historical background of the understanding of the notion of magic as a value-laden category in the encounter with Others, and on what basis the usage of this term could lead to the systematic exclusion of some phenomena from the field of serious research. The main sources for my thesis are works of Woodroffe – Arthur Avalon on whose case regarding the previous aims I want to show why the tantra became a relevant subject of serious research, and how it was established in the West. What is the newness in Woodroffe‘s discourse, and what this case tells about the nature of the modern study of religion, and about the politics of studying foreign cultures in general?
