Máj versus Kytice: A Contrastive Quantitative Study of Mácha's and Erben's Styles

Abstract:

Práce se zaměřuje na prozkoumání významných básnických textů 19. století - Máje K. H. Máchy a Kytice K. J. Erbena - pomocí stylometrických indexů. Jejím základním cílem je zjistit, jak se od sebe liší, a v čem se naopak podobají. Indexy, jimž se věnujeme, jsou aktivita a deskriptivita (Q a D), průměrná délka tokenu (ATL), vzdálenosti sloves (VD), nominalita (n), slovní bohatství (MATTR) a eufonie (E). V práci nejprve představujeme metodologii, autory, jejich důležitá díla a zkoumaný korpus textů. Stěžejní část je pak zaměřena na analýzu, ve které prezentujeme výsledky jednotlivých indexů a na základě u-testů zkoumáme, zda jsou rozdíly mezi Májem a Kyticí statisticky signifikantní. Práce je doplněna o ukázky z obou sbírek, na nichž výsledky interpretujeme.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis focuses on examining substantial poetical texts from the 19th centu-ry ? Máj by K. H. Mácha and Kytice by K. J. Erben ? with the use of stylometric indexes. The main goal of this thesis is to ascertain the differences and similarities between these two texts. The indexes which we employ are activity and descriptiveness (Q and D), aver-age tokens length (ATL), verb distance (VD), nominality (n), moving-average type-token ratio (MATTR), and euphony (E). In this thesis, we start with methodology, the authors, their significant pieces of work, and the examined corpus of texts. The pivotal part of this thesis is devoted to the analysis in which we present the results of individual indexes and on the grounds of the u-tests we inspect if the differences between Máj and Kytice are statistically significant. The thesis also includes extracts from both the collections of po-ems that help us interpret the results.
