The Uncanny: The Double as a Literary Convention

Abstract:

Diplomová práca pojednáva o koncepte „dvojníctva“, ktorý je jedným z najdôležitejších aspektov konceptu „the uncanny“ („tiesnivé, podivné, mätúce“). Štúdia Otta Ranka Der Doppelgänger („Dvojník“), Freudova teória „narcisizmu“ a Lacanova teória „štádia zrkadla“ sa ukazujú ako obzvlášť relevantné pre bádanie v tejto oblasti. Koncepty „tiesnivého“ a „dvojníctva“ potom slúžia ako rámec diskusie o niekoľkých témach z literárnej, psychoanalytickej a filozofickej oblasti. Časť pojednávajúca o diele Edgara Allana Poea „William Wilson“ sa zaoberá prenasledujúcou povahou mena, činnosťou superega a neustálym dohľadom „otca“. Nasledujúca sekcia pristupuje k autobiografickému písaniu ako k forme dvojníctva a pojednáva o feministickom a psychoanalytickom prístupe k „Žltej tapete“ Charlotte Perkins Gilmanovej v kontexte autobiografie. Interpretácia „Temnej polovice“ Stephene Kinga sa sústreďuje na otázku pseudonymu, tvorbu fiktívneho „ja“ a na písanie, ako prostriedok utvárajúci „dvojníka“ a bytie vlastného „ja“. Táto diplomová práca tak opisuje najdôležitejšie črty „zdvojovania“ a prichádza so spôsobmi, akými možno pristupovať k iným javom „dvojníctva“.

Abstract:

The M.A. thesis deals with the concept of “the double”, which constitutes one of the most important aspects of “the uncanny”. Otto Rank’s study Der Doppelgänger (“the double”), Freud’s theory of narcissism and Lacan’s theory of the mirror stage are particularly relevant to the inquiry. The concepts of "the uncanny" and "the double" then serve as a general framework for the discussion of several notions from literary, psychoanalytic, and philosophical contexts. The section on Edgar Allan Poe's ‘William Wilson’ deals with the haunting character of the name, the work of the superego and constant surveillance by the "father". The next section proposes to perceive autobiographical writing as the double and discusses feminist and psychoanalytical approaches to Charlotte Perkins Gilman's ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ in the context of autobiography. The interpretation of Stephen King's "The Dark Half" concentrates on the problem of the pseudonym, the creation of the fictional self, and on writing as constituting the double and one’s existence. The analysis, thus, describes the major features of “doubling” and suggests ways to approach other phenomena based on the concept of the double.
