Down syndrome and trisomy 21 - new insights into old problem

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce shrnuje nejnovější poznatky týkající se Downova syndromu, jakožto nejznámější chromozomové poruchy u člověka. Práce obsahuje průřez historií syndromu, jeho detailní popis a informace o kauzálních příčinách tohoto onemocnění. Dále shrnuje poznatky o potenciálních kandidátních genech, které by se mohly podílet na vzniku jednotlivých příznaků Downova syndromu. V závěru práce jsou popsány možnosti léčby onemocnění, které jsou dostupné v současnosti a jsou zde také diskutovány nejnovější poznatky, týkající se potenciálních terapeutických možností v budoucnosti. Největší důraz je kladen na novou metodu inaktivace chromozomu 21, která je příslibem kauzální genové terapie tohoto onemocnění.

Abstract:

The Bachelor thesis summarises the most recent findings regarding Down syndrome as the chromosome disorder best known in humans. The thesis contains a history of the syndrome, its detailed description, and information about the causal causes of this disorder. Furthermore, it summarises the findings of potential candidate genes which might be involved in the creation of individual symptoms of Down syndrome. The conclusion of the thesis includes the description of possible treatments of the disease which are currently available, and recent findings about the potential therapeutic possibilities in the future are also discussed. The biggest emphasis is given to the new method of chromosome 21 inactivation which promises causal gene therapy of this disorder.
