Abstract:

Práce pojednává o historii Spojených států amerických. Zaměřuje se přitom na interakci mezi původními obyvateli Severní Ameriky a kolonisty evropského původu. Tato interakce byla významného charakteru a v podstatě tvoří dějiny Spojených států amerických. V okamžiku kdy první Evropan vstoupil na nově objevený kontinent, životy Severoamerických Indiánů se změnily. Poháněni novými možnostmi v nové zemi, Evropané nepřetržitě osidlovali Severoamerický kontinent. Při tomto osidlování brali přitom malé ohledy na původní obyvatele, kterých bylo v roce 1492 circa deset až dvanáct milionů. Práce zkoumá mechanismy, které musely být uplatněny, aby původní obyvatelé Severní Ameriky ustoupily expanzi Euro-Američanů na západ. Na pozadí konceptů jako akulturace, asimilace, genocida či uplatňování jazyka jako nástroje koloniální moci práce zkoumá tyto mechanismy: zjevné poslání (či expanzionistická doktrína), obchod s kožešinou, záměrné šíření nemocí, totální válka, systém sluv a Dawesův zákon. Práce ukazuje, že tyto výše zmíněné mechanismy byly úspěšné neboť téměř všichni Severoameričtí Indiáni byly ke konci devatenáctého století zbaveni podstatné části jejich kultury a všichni byli nuceni žít ve státem kontrolovaných rezervacích.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the history of the United States of America. Its focus is on the interaction between the people of European descent and Native Americans. In fact, interaction between these two different cultures constitutes the history of the United States of America. From the moment the European set foot on the North American continent, the lives of the original inhabitants of the continent changed. Driven by the new possibilities in the new land, Americans were constantly settling the continent. The problem was that continent was settled by the estimated ten to twelve million of Native Americans. The thesis discusses the mechanisms and/or concepts that were implemented by the Euro-Americans in order that the Native Americans would get out of the way of westward expansion. gainst the backdrop of the discussion of acculturation, assimilation, genocide and implementation of language as a vehicle of colonial power, the mechanisms/concepts concerned are: Manifest Destiny, fur trade, deliberate spread of European diseases, total war, treaty system and the Dawes Act. The thesis shows that the mechanisms/concepts were successful as all of the Native Americans were deprived of their original way of life and were living on reservations under the control of the US Government by the end of the nineteenth century.
