The size of the technological gap in selected sectors of the economies of the Visegrad Group countries

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je určit technologické mezery a jejich determinující faktory států Visegrádské skupiny v období 2008-2018 v odvětvích - Zpracovatelský průmysl (C), Výroba a rozvod elektřiny, plynu, tepla a klimatizovaného vzduchu (D), Informace a komunikace (J). Pro zjištění mezer byla použita metoda Shift-share analýza. Potřebná data byla získána se statistik Eurostatu. Ovlivňujícími faktory je míra využívání technologií, objem výdajů na výzkum a vývoj, přímé zahraniční investice, patenty a jiné. Česká republika byla leaderem s kladnou celkovou i dílčími technologickými mezerami v celém období. Nejprogresivnější vývoj mělo Polsko, zlepšilo svou zápornou technologickou mezeru (nejvíce u odvětví D). Maďarsko bylo leaderem odvětví C. Diplomová práce představuje široký informační materiál pro výzkumníky, odbornou i širokou veřejnost o skupině V4, přináší vhled do problematiky týkající se technologické mezery, produktivity práce, přidané hodnoty a regionálních rozdílů v těchto indikátorech. Přínosem diplomové práce je, že se zabývá problémovými oblastmi v odvětvích států V4 a velikostí technologických mezer. Též samotná aplikace Shift-share analýzy s využitím dat o skupině V4, kdy výsledky zapadají do rámce a kontextu Mezinárodního visegrádského fondu a webu www.visegradgroup.eu, který je spravován tímto fondem a shromažďuje informace, články a studie o skupině V4.

Abstract:

The aim of the diploma thesis is to identify the technological gaps and their determining factors in the Visegrad Group in the period 2008-2018 in the sectors - Manufacturing (C), Production and distribution of electricity, gas, heat and air conditioning (D), Information and communication (J). Shift-share analysis was used to identify gaps. The necessary data were obtained from Eurostat statistics. The identified influencing factors are the level of technology usage, the volume of expenditures on R&D, foreign direct investment, patents and others. The Czech Republic was the leader with positive overall and partial technology gaps throughout the period. Poland had the most progressive development, improving its negative technology gap (most notably for sector D). Hungary was the leader in sector C and dragged the benchmark value. The thesis provides a broad informative material for researchers, practitioners and the general public on the V4 group, providing insights on the technology gap, labour productivity, value added and regional differences in these indicators. The contribution of the thesis is that it addresses the problem areas in the industries of the V4 countries and the size of the technology gaps. Also the application of Shift-share analysis itself using data on the V4 group, where the results fit into the framework and context of the International Visegrad Fund and the website www.visegradgroup.eu, which is administered by the fund and collects information, articles and studies on the V4 group.
