Situationism and Virtue Ethics

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá otázkou adekvátnosti morálního charakteru v Aristotelově etické teorii, konkrétně pak diskusí, která vznikla mezi filosofickými situacionisty a obhájci morálního charakteru a která se rozvíjela v letech 1998 až 2010. Základní částí je argumentační analýza této diskuse, která je zde rozdělena na dvě části: deskriptivní a normativní. Zvýšená pozornost je věnována autorům: John Doris, Julia Annasová, Maria Merrittová a Rachana Kamtekarová. Jako v jiných pracích na toto téma, i zde je jako stěžejní problém identifikováno rozdílné chápání diskutovaného konceptu (tj. morálního charakteru). Specifikem této práce je zvýšená pozornost, která je věnována představení obou diskusních stran (jejich východisek a cílů).

Abstract:

The thesis analyses a question of the adequacy of moral character in Aristotle`s ethical theory and specifically concerns the discussion which arose between the philosophical situationists and the proponents of moral character, which boomed in the years from 1998 to 2010. The core of the thesis consists of an argumentation analysis of this discussion, which is divided into two parts: descriptive and normative. Increased attention is paid to the following authors: John Doris, Julia Annas, Maria Merritt and Rachana Kamtekar. Like in other works on this subject, the fundamental problem identified here lies in a difference in understanding of the discussed concepts (i.e. moral character). A distinct feature of this thesis is the increased attention that is paid to the presentation of both parties (their backgrounds and intentions).
