Freudian Jekyll and Lacanian Gray: A Psychoanalytical Reading of Two English Novels

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je ponořit se do tajemné oblasti psychiky dvou literárních postav: Dr. Henry Jekylla a Doriana Graye. Psychoanalytickou oporu přitom poskytuje Sigmund Freud a Jacques Lacan. Spolu s psychologickým výkladem hlavních protagonistů jsou zkoumány také životy a zkušenosti obou autorů s cílem prokázat, že tyto literární postavy jsou vlastně velmi podobné jejich tvůrcům. Hrdina Roberta Louise Stevensona díla Podivný případ Dr. Jekylla a pana Hyda je analyzován nejdříve pomocí Freudových principů. Freudova teorie tří složek psychiky (Ono, Já a Nadjá) pravděpodobně vysvětluje složitou narativní techniku a matoucí použití zájmen v románu. Kromě tohoto tvrzení pomohou lépe pochopit vývoj postavy další pojmy, jako například „dvojnictví“ nebo Oidipův komplex. V druhé polovině práce je zkoumán román Oscara Wildea Obraz Doriana Graye. Jeho titulní postava je ideální pro interpretaci podle Lacana, protože Dorian vstupuje do děje jako tabula rasa. Vliv ostatních postav vytváří a formuje jeho osobnost a tak podporuje Lacanovu představu, že nejdůležitějším faktorem rozvoje osobnosti je sociální a kulturní zázemí. Dále je aplikováno několik jeho významných teorií, například „stádium zrcadla“ (the mirror stage) a tři „domény“ (Skutečné, Imaginární a Symbolické). Práce tedy nejen interpretuje psychologické motivace postav, ale také porovnává a staví proti sobě tyto dvě psychoanalytické teorie.

Abstract:

The aim of the present thesis is to delve into the mysterious realm of the psyche of two literary characters: Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Dorian Gray. The psychoanalytical underpinning is provided by Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan. Alongside with the psychological interpretation of the main protagonists, the lives and experiences of the two writers are scrutinized as well, in order to demonstrate that these literary characters are actually very similar to their creators. Robert Louis Stevenson’s hero in The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is the first to be analysed with the help of Freud’s principles. The Freudian notion of the three agencies of the psyche (Id, Ego and Super-Ego) can probably give an explanation for the complex narrative technique and the confusing usage of pronouns in the novel. Beside this assertion, other concepts, such as the double or the Oedipal complex, help to understand the development of the character better. In the second half of the thesis, Oscar Wilde’s novel The Picture of Dorian Gray is put under the microscope. His title character is ideal for a Lacanian interpretation, because Dorian steps into the plot as a tabula rasa. The influence of the other figures creates and shapes his personality. Therefore, it underpins Lacan’s notion that the most important factor in one’s development is the social and cultural cobweb. Furthermore, several of his significant theories are likewise implemented, for instance the mirror stage and the three orders (Real, Imaginary and Symbolic). The thesis, thus, not only interprets the characters’ psychological incentives, but it also compares and contrasts the two psychoanalytical theories.
