Mentors Evaluation from the Perspective of Nursing Students

Abstract:

Cíl: Cílem práce bylo zjistit, jak studenti ošetřovatelství hodnotí mentory klinické praxe. Metodika: Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 169 studentů druhých a třetích ročníků prezenčního studia bakalářského studijního oboru Všeobecná sestra. Empirická část bakalářské práce byla realizována pomocí kvantitativního průzkumného šetření. Byla použita metoda dotazníkového šetření. Pro sběr dat byl zvolen nestandardizovaný dotazník strukturován do 4 oblastí hodnocení. Studenti hodnotili mentora, se kterým se jim nejlépe spolupracovala a mentora, s kterým byla spolupráce nejvíce problematická. Empirické šetření bylo realizováno v období od prosince 2010 do konce ledna 2011 na Lékařské fakultě v Ostravě, Ústavu ošetřovatelství Slezské univerzity v Opavě a Ústavu ošetřovatelství Univerzity Tomáše Bati ve Zlíně. Výsledky: Mezi hodnocením mentora, se kterým se studentům spolupracovalo nejlépe a mentora, se kterým byla spolupráce nejvíce problematická, byly zjištěny rozdíly. U mentora, se kterým byla spolupráce problematická, byla většina studentů se vztahem mezi mentorem a studentem nespokojená. 33 % respondentů přidělilo známku 2 = částečně nesouhlasím tvrzení ?Ve vztahu s mentorem převládala vzájemná úcta, respekt a uznání?. Dále bylo zjištěno, že v oblasti osobnost mentora je nejlépe hodnocena mentorova odbornost. Výrok ?Mentor byl zkušeným odborníkem ve svém klinickém oboru? byl hodnocen známkou 5 = plně souhlasím 55 respondenty v případě mentora, se kterým se studentům spolupracovalo nejlépe a známkou 4 = částečně souhlasím, ohodnotilo 33 % respondentů mentora, se kterým byla spolupráce problematická. Z výsledků vyplývá, že mezi nejslabší stránku všech hodnocených mentorů, v oblasti vedení odborné praxe patří poskytování zpětné vazby studentům. Nejhůře hodnocená byla oblast proces učení. Závěr: Důležitou součásti studia ošetřovatelství je klinická praxe studentů, která je realizovaná pod odborným vedením mentorů. Velice zajímavé jsou výsledky týkající se osobnosti, kde studenti podle průzkumu považují za nejsilnější stránku mentorů jejich odbornost. Odborník ve svém klinickém oboru je mentor, se kterým se studentům spolupracovalo nejlépe, ale i ten, se kterým byla spolupráce problematická. Důležitá je také nejslabší stránka osobnosti mentora, kterou se v obou případech stalo ?nadšení? z klinické výuky. Tento výsledek koresponduje vyjádření studentů k zlepšení výuky odborné praxe, kdy studenti nejčastěji uváděli, že je potřeba více mentorů, kteří mají zájem vést studenty.

Abstract:

Objective: The objective of this research was to find out how mentors, who supervised nursing students on practical training in hospitals, were evaluated by their students. Methodic: The experimental sample was formed by 169 students, all of them 2nd and 3rd year Nursing undergraduates. The empirical part of this diploma work was formed by a quantitative non-standardized questionnaire. This questionnaire was divided into 4 evaluation areas. Students evaluated the mentor with whom they felt cooperation was best, and the one they thought was the most problematic. The survey was carried out from December 2010 to the end of January 2011, at the Medical Faculty in Ostrava, as well as Silesian University?s Nursing Institute in Opava, and Nursing Institute of Tomas Bata University in Zlin. Results: Differences were found between the evaluation of the most and the least cooperative mentor. In the case of the mentor with whom cooperation was seen as most problematic, most students were not satisfied with their mutual relationship. 33 % of all respondents put Grade 2 (partly disagree) to the statement ?The relationship with the mentor was one of respect and appreciation?. Further on, it was found out that in the area of the mentor?s personality, the highest evaluated aspect was the mentor?s qualification. The statement ?The mentor was an experienced professional in his/her clinical field? was graded 5 (Fully Agree) by 55 respondents in the case of the mentor with whom cooperation was best, and 4 (Partly Agree), by 33% of all respondents in the case of the mentor with whom cooperation was problematic. Another result of this survey is that one of the weakest aspects of all the evaluated mentors was giving student feedback. The least favorable was the evaluation of Learning Process. Conclusion: Practical training in hospitals is a very important part of any Nursing study program. This training is supervised by mentors. It is very interesting to see results concerning personality, which reveal that students see mentors? qualification and experience as their most important asset. Both the mentor with whom students felt cooperation was best, and the one with whom cooperation was problematic, were seen as professionals. Also important is the weakest aspect of the mentor?s personality. In both cases, it was ?excitement about practical teaching?. This result corresponds to students? suggestions for improving practical training, where the most common response is that there is a need for more mentors who are interested in actually teaching their students.
