The construction of power in a relationship between personal assistants and clients with mild intellectual disability in sheltered housing

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá konstrukcí moci ve vztahu mezi osobními asistenty a klienty s mentální retardací na chráněném bydlení z pohledu pracovníků. V teoretické části jsou vymezeny pojmy související s tématem práce, tedy moc, mentální retardace, sociální konstrukce, chráněné bydlení a osobní asistence. Autorka využila kvalitativní výzkumnou strategii a data získala prostřednictvím polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s osobními asistenty a klienty chráněného bydlení. Empirická část práce si klade za cíl zodpovědět hlavní výzkumnou otázku, která zní: Jakým způsobem osobní asistenti konstruují moc ve vztahu s klienty s lehkou mentální retardací na chráněném bydlení? Zjištěním této práce je to, že osobní asistenti konstruují vztah s klienty jako nerovnocenný a liší se pouze v tom, do jaké míry tuto mocenskou asymetrii vědomě reflektují. V závěru práce jsou uvedena doporučení pro praxi a návrhy dalších výzkumů.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the construction of power in a relationship between personal assistants and clients with mild mental retardation in sheltered housing by the assistants. The theoretical part defines the terms related to the subject of the thesis: power, mental retardation, social contruction, sheltered housing and personal assistance. The author used qualitative research method and data were collected by the method of semi-structured interviews with personal assistants and clients in sheltered housing. The empirical part aims to answer the main research question: How do the personal assistants construct power in the relationship with clients with mild mental retardation in sheltered housing? The findings of this thesis show that personal assistants construct the relationship with clients as asymmetrical and the difference between them lie in how much they reflect this power asymmetry. The final part contains recommendation for practical application and suggestions for further research.
