Controversial Figure and Effective Politician: Discourse Construction of Miloš Zeman's Media Image in Selected British Online Media

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá diskurzivní konstrukcí mediálního obrazu Miloše Zemana ve vybraných britských online médiích, konkrétně v BBC, The Telegraph a The Guardian. Cílem práce je pomocí metody diskurzivní analýzy dle Jamese Paula Geeho popsat, jak vypadal a jakým způsobem byl utvářen mediální obraz českého prezidenta vobdobí od 26. 1. 2013 do 26. 1. 2018. Zároveň je záměrem práce identifikovat a vzájemně porovnat editoriální praktiky zvolených médií. V první části práce jsou představena teoretická východiska z oblasti mediálních studií a mezinárodních vztahů a kulturní a politický kontext. Metodologická část následně popisuje cíl výzkumu, zvolenou metodu nebo konstrukci výzkumného souboru. Analytická část představuje diskurzivní modely identifikované ve vybraných textech jednotlivých médií. Závěrečné části se následně věnují shrnutí a interpretaci dosažených výsledků. Na základě analýzy lze za nejvýznamnější označit diskurzivní modely Miloš Zeman jako kontroverzní postava a efektivní politik. Výsledky zároveň naznačily lišící se ideologické směřování vybraných médií.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the discourse construction of Miloš Zeman’s media image in selected British online media, specifically in BBC, The Telegraph and The Guardian, between 26th January 2013 and 26th January 2018. The aim of the thesis is to describe the media image and also identify how it was created with the use of discourse analysis method described by James Paul Gee. Another objective of the thesis is to identify and compare editorial practices of selected media. Theoretical concepts of media studies and international relations and also cultural and political contexts are presented in the first part of the thesis. Following methodological part describes the aim of the thesis, as well as chosen method and the construction of the research sample. Discourse models identified in the sample are introduced in the analytical part of the thesis. The summary of findings as well as their comparison is presented in the final parts of the thesis. The results of the analysis show the discourse model of Miloš Zeman as a controversial figure and effective politician as the most significant ones. The results also indicate different ideological direction of selected media.
