From a house to a flat: stories of expropriation in a Brno housing estate

Abstract:

Tématem práce je výstavba brněnského sídliště Bohunice a jejích důsledků na lokální společenství. Původně vesnické osídlení na okraji města bylo v průběhu 70. a 80. let transformováno v sídliště, což vedlo k fyzické destrukci jádra původní vesnice. Cílem výzkumu bylo zjistit, jaký vliv měla tato zásadní prostorová změna žitého prostředí na obyvatele původní vesnice. Práce vychází z hloubkových rozhovorů s lidmi, jejichž domy a pozemky byly v souvislosti s výstavbou sídliště vyvlastněny. Proces výstavby sídliště je pojímán jako střet odlišných sociálních zájmů, v jehož rámci analyzuji strategie státních institucí a taktiky obyvatel vesnice v průběhu výstavby. Odlišné pojetí prostoru v rámci tohoto konfliktu přitom odhaluje význam místa pro původní obyvatele. Důsledky vyvlastnění a ztráty domova v souvislosti s výstavbou sídliště jsou pak interpretovány optikou vymístění, které se ukazuje být dlouhodobým procesem narušení kontinuity identity s trvalými důsledky. Docházím k závěru, že přidělené byty na sídlišti nemohly být adekvátní náhradou bydlení z toho důvodu, že bylo jiné. Teoretické zasazení práce do debat o socialistických městech přitom umožňuje identifikovat specifický druh nerovnosti v bydlení z jeho reduktivního chápání jako univerzální materiální potřeby neumožňující zohlednit symbolické významy bydlení jako domova v mnohem širším smyslu.

Abstract:

The subject of the thesis is the construction of a housing estate in Brno and its impact on the local community. The formerly rural settlement of Bohunice on the edge of the city was transformed into a housing estate during the 1970s and early 1980s which meant the physical destruction of the core of the village. The aim of the research was to find out the consequences of this radical change of the lived environment for its inhabitants. To achieve this, the thesis draws from in-depth interviews with people whose houses were expropriated because of the construction. The process of construction is then interpreted as a conflict of different social interests and analyzed through strategies of state institutions and tactics of the village inhabitants. Different interpretation of space within this conflict reveals the importance of the place for its inhabitants. The impacts of the expropriation and loss of home are then interpreted through the lens of the displacement, which indicates long-term process of identity discontinuity with permanent consequences. I conclude that the allocated flats in a housing estate could not be an adequate substitution of housing simply because it was different. Theoretical framing of the thesis in the academic debates over the socialist cities enable the identification of a specific kind of housing inequality resulting from its reductive rendition as universal material need which left no room for understanding of the symbolical values of housing as a home in a much broader sense.
