The relationship between empathy and the personality dimension of individualism - collectivism

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce pojednává o fenoménu empatie, jeho emocionálních a kognitivních aspektech a možnostech měření, o konceptu individualismu -kolektivismu na úrovni země i jednotlivce, tedy idiocentrismu - alocentrismu a poskytuje vhled do souvislostí mezi těmito dvěma psychologickými konstrukty. Cílem empirického výzkumu bylo zjistit vztah mezi mírou empatie a osobnostní dimenzí individualismu - kolektivismu u souboru vysokoškolských studentů oborů zaměřených na člověka a oborů zaměřených na neživé objekty. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 295 respondentů, z toho 147 bylo mužů a 148 žen. Pro účely našeho výzkumu jsme zvolili dva dotazníky: EQ měřící úroveň empatie a českou mutaci škály INDCOL od Bartoše zjišťující úroveň individualismu - kolektivismu. Vztahy mezi proměnnými byly ověřovány prostřednictvím Pearsonovy korelační analýzy a rozdíly mezi vybranými skupinami byly sledovány Studentovým dvouvýběrovým t-testem. Naše analýza ukázala, že míra empatie pozitivně korelovala s kolektivismem a negativně korelovala s individualismem.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the phenomenon of empathy, its aspects and possible ways of measurements, it also focuses on the concept of individualism - collectivism at the country and the individual levels, i.e. idiocentrism - allocentrism, and offer insight into the relations between these two psychological constructs. The aim of the empirical research was to investigate the relationship between the level of empathy and the personality dimension of individualism - collectivism in a set of undergraduate students of human-centered and inanimate object-centered disciplines. Our sample consists of 295 respondents, of whom 147 were men and 148 were female. For the purpose of our research we chose two questionnaires: the EQ measuring the level of empathy and the Czech mutation of the INDCOL scale by Bartoš measuring the level of individualism - collectivism. The relationships between the variables were verified by Pearson correlation analysis and the differences between the selected groups were observed by Student's Two-Sample T-Test. Our analysis showed that the level of empathy was positively correlated with collectivism and negatively correlated with individualism.
