Charles Bukowski: Analysis of the persona of Dirty Old Man

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is focused on the analysis of Charles Bukowski's persona of Dirty Old Man. This persona which Bukowski adopted at the very beginning of his career as a writer is portrayed in his work, brought Bukowski to the attention of the readers and caused heavy criticism of his work. However, this image of a tough guy, which is frequently assumed by the narrators in Bukowski's works, is often confused with the author himself. For this reason, the reader should distinguish between the narrator, sometimes represented by Henry Chinaski Bukowski's alter ego, the implied author and the author himself. To be aware of this distinction and to get to know the man behind the books, it is important to have a better understanding of the persona featured in the writings. This thesis therefore examines the concept of the implied author and briefly introduces the life and career of Charles Bukowski. It also analyses the implied author and its development in selected works, and provides a possible reason behind the creation of the persona of Dirty Old man.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce je zaměřena na analýzu persony starého prasáka Charlese Bukowského. Tato persona, kterou si Bukowski osvojil na počátku své spisovatelské kariéry, je vykreslena v celé jeho tvorbě, dostala ho do povědomí čtenářů, ale zároveň se setkala s ostrou kritikou. Tato image "drsňáka", pod kterou vypravěči Bukowského děl vystupují, je často připisována samotnému autorovi. Z tohoto důvodu by měl čtenář rozlišovat mezi vypravěčem, který je někdy ztělesňován Henrym Chinaski- Bukowského alter egem, implikovaným autorem a autorem skutečným. Aby byl čtenář schopen tohoto rozlišení a aby lépe pochopil autora děl, je důležité porozumět personě ztvárněné v jeho díle. Tato práce se proto zaměřuje na vysvětlení pojmu "implikovaný autor" a krátce čtenáři představí život a kariéru Charlese Bukowského. Zabývá se také analýzou implikovaného autora, jeho vývojem ve vybraných dílech a snaží se poskytnout příčinu vzniku persony starého prasáka.
