Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá rozborem míst a prostorů nacházejících se v příbězích románů Bless Me, Ultima (1972) od Rudolfa Anayi a The House on Mango Street (1983) od Sandry Cisneros. Práce se soustředí konkrétně na vztah obou vypravěčů knih k těmto místům a na to, jak tato místa a hodnoty s nimi spojené ovlivňují jejich dospívání a rozhodnutí pro jinou budoucnost než tu, kterou vidí u svých vrstevníků. Zároveň je zohledněn i mexicko-americký původ vypravěčů, který je v jejich dospívání specificky formuje. První část práce krátce představí mexicko-americkou literaturu a střípky historie, které zásadně ovlivnily tvorbu autorů tohoto žánru. Druhá část první kapitoly se zabývá teorií Yi-Fu Tuana, která popisuje rozdíl mezi místem a prostorem (space and place). Další část této kapitoly se věnuje konceptu jinakosti (otherness). Poslední část první kapitoly krátce shrnuje dějovou linku obou románů a představí jejich autory pro bližší kontext analytické části práce. Analytická část práce se zabývá rozborem jednotlivých míst z románů a analyzuje vztahy, které k nim vypravěči mají. Rozbor se nejdříve zaměřuje na román Bless me, Ultima, a poté se přesune k analýze románu The House on Mango Street. Poslední část rozboru se věnuje srovnání nálezů z analýz obou knih.

Abstract:

This thesis discusses the spaces and places present in the novels Bless me, Ultima (1972) by Rudolfo Anaya and The House on Mango Street (1983) by Sandra Cisneros. It focuses specifically on the relationships between the narrators and these spaces and places and how these relationships influence the narrators in their coming of age and subsequently in their decision to strive for a different future path than their peers. It also considers the narrators’ Chicano descent and what specific obstacles that presents for the protagonists. The first part introduces the history of Chicano literature. The same chapter then focuses on the theory of space and place developed by Yi-Fu Tuan. The subsequent part of the first chapter presents the concept of otherness, and the last part of this chapter presents a summary of the novels and the biographies of the authors to contextualize the analysis. The analytical part discusses the specific spaces and places of the novels and analyzes the narrators’ relationships to these. It starts with the analysis of Bless me, Ultima, and then moves on to the analysis of The House on Mango Street. The final section of the analysis compares the findings from the analyses of the two novels.
