Typical characteristics of gifted children from the perspective of teachers

Abstract:

Práce se věnuje tématu typických charakteristik nadaných dětí z pohledu učitelů. Konkrétněji se zabývá identifikací možných mylných představ učitelů 1. stupně základních škol o charakteristikách a projevech chování nadaných dětí, které mohou komplikovat proces identifikace nadaných dětí učiteli. Sběr dat probíhal prostřednictvím dotazníkového šetření založeného na otevřených otázkách. Výzkumný soubor byl tvořen 43 učiteli 1. stupně základních škol z Jihomoravského kraje. Analýza výsledků výzkumného šetření poukázala na více či méně problematické oblasti. Realistická očekávání mají učitelé především v oblasti sociálních vztahů, postojů k autoritě či kognitivních charakteristik nadaných dětí, kterým také připisují při identifikaci nejvýznamnější roli. Za problematické oblasti lze označit představu učitelů o postoji nadaných dětí k pravidlům, jejich smyslové přecitlivělosti či emocionálních charakteristikách. Učitelé mají taktéž tendenci propojovat nadání s konkrétními vyučovacími předměty nebo rodinným prostředím. Získané výsledky byly diskutovány v souvislosti se zjištěním odborné literatury a zahraničních výzkumů, bylo navrženo možné využití těchto výsledků v praxi. Závěrem byly reflektovány možné limity výzkumu a návrhy pro další studie realizované v této oblasti

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the issue of typical characteristics of gifted children from the perspective of teachers. More specifically, it is focused on the identification of primary school teachers´ possible misconceptions of characteristics and behaviors of gifted children, which can complicate the process of identification of gifted children by teachers. The data were collected by means of a questionnaire survey based on the open-ended questions. The representative sample consisted of 43 teachers of primary schools from the South Moravian Region. The analysis of the results of the research pointed out both to the more and less problematical areas. Teachers have realistic expectations especially in the areas of social relationships, attitudes to the authority and cognitive characteristics of gifted children, which are also the most important aspects for the teachers´ identification of gifted children. The most problematical areas are teachers´ conceptions of the attitudes of gifted children to rules, of their sensory hypersensitivity and of their emotional characteristics. Teachers also tend to relate giftedness to particular school subjects or to the children´s family environment. The results were discussed in relation to the findings of literature and foreign research, and their possible use in practice was proposed. The final part of the thesis mentioned possible limitations of the research and proposals for other studies which could be carried out in this field.
