Taphonomy of settlement burials of the Early Bronze Age

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je zhodnotit a interpretovat kostní modifikace na lidských ostatcích z regionu střední Moravy skrze tafonomickou analýzu. Všichni zkoumaní jedinci byli nalezeni v sídlištních jamách v neanatomické poloze. Ostatky byly disartikulované a v některých případech byly doprovázeny zvířecími kostmi nebo milodary. Analýza povrchu kostí odhalila u většiny jedinců přítomnost sekundárních zásahů. Specifická kritéria nicméně nepotvrdila násilí a válečnictví jako příčinu těchto modifikací. Přítomné znaky na kostech svým původem a způsobem provedení nejlépe vystihují rituály jako příčinu vzniku, u několika jedinců nelze úplně vyloučit ani možnost kanibalismu, který však mohl mít i rituální podstatu.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to evaluate and interpret bone modifications on human remains from the Central Moravian region through taphonomic analysis. All subjects had been found in the settlement pits in non-anatomical position. The remains were disarticulated and sometimes accompanied by animal bones or bronze artifacts. Analysis of the bone surface discovered the presence of secondary interventions on most of the individuals. Specific criteria, however, did not confirm warfare and violence as causes of these interventions. Present marks on the bones in its origins and modus operandi best describe rituals as the cause. Among several individuals there can not be completely excluded the possibility of cannibalism, but it could also have a ritual nature.
