The use of phytobentos for indication of contamination of the environment

Abstract:

Voda je důležitým přírodním zdrojem pro člověka a podstatnou součástí naší krajiny. Studium kvality vody je nezbytné pro to, abychom tento zdroj mohli účinně chránit. Evropská i česká legislativa vyžaduje pravidelný monitoring stavu vodních toků i nádrží. Tento stav je nutno hodnotit jak na základě fyzikálních a chemických parametrů, tak na základě složení biotických společenstev žijících na lokalitě. Jedním z těchto společenstev je fytobentos. Předložená diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou bioindikace stavu malých vodních toků pomocí fytobentosu. V teoretické části jsou shrnuty dosavadní znalosti o vztahu mezi druhovým složením bentických řas a parametry prostředí, pozornost je věnována zejména trofii, saprobitě a koncentraci těžkých kovů. Z řas je největší důraz kladen na rozsivky, které jsou v mnohých evropských státech sledovány jako reprezentativní složka fytobentosu. Součástí práce je výzkum prováděný na 16 lokalitách v jižních Čechách vzorkovaných ve dvou sezonách. Z výsledků taxonomických analýz fytobentosu jsou odvozeny indexy trofie a saprobity pro každou lokalitu. Dále je provedeno srovnání druhového složení řas a různých parametrů prostředí, zejména koncentrace těžkých kovů. Došla jsem k závěru, že všechny sledované lokality jsou zatíženy saprobním i trofickým znečištěním. Závislost druhového složení fytobentosu na těžkých kovech nebyla spolehlivě prokázána, pravděpodobně kvůli jejich nízké koncentraci na většině lokalit, přítomnosti extrémních hodnot a silnému vlivu ostatních faktorů prostředí. Bylo však vytvořeno několik hypotéz o možné bioindikaci zvýšené hladiny kovů, které by stálo za to ověřit na vhodnějších lokalitách.

Abstract:

Water is an important natural resource and essential part of our landscape. It's necessary to study the water quality, so we can protect this resource effectively. The European and Czech law requires regular monitoring of the status of water bodies. This status is analyzed on the basis of chemical and physical parameters of water, as well as the composition of biotic communities living in the location. One of these communities is phytobenthos. This thesis discusses the topic of using phytobenthos for bioindication of status of small streams. The teoretical part resumes the present knowledge of relationship between the composition of phytobenthos and parameters of the water environment. The emphasis is put on trophic and saprobic status and the concentration of heavy metals. Among algal groups are stressed diatoms, in many European countries considered as a representative group of phytobenthos. The thesis also contains a research done in 16 locations in southern Bohemia sampled in two years. Indices of trophic and saprobic status were computed from the species composition of benthic algae. The composition of phytobenthos was also compared with different parameters of the environment, mainly the heavy metals concentration. I came to the conclusion that all observed locations are loaded with saprobic and trophic contamination. The relationship between species composition and concentration of heavy metals was not clearly proven. It was probably caused by their low concentration in most of the locations, presence of extreme values and strong influence of other factors. However some hypotheses about bioindication of contamination by heavy metals were made and it would be interesting to check them in some more approppriate locations.
