The Consequences of the Dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Founding of the Czechoslovak Republic on the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of St Vincenc de Paul during the 1920s

Abstract:

S rozpadem monarchie se objevil nacionální spor mezi částí českých sester a vídeňským generálním vedení kongregace Milosrdných sester sv. Vincence de Paul. Hlavním strůjcem těchto nálad měl být P. Josef Olšina. Vídeň odmítla oddělení části kongregace jako akt zmrzačení, superior Franz Hlawati přistoupil pak roku 1920 pouze k vytvoření československé provincie s vlastním noviciátem. Po dvou letech sestry žádaly vytvoření samostatného společenství - československé kongregace vincentek (se schváleným názvem Služebnice sv. Vincence, sv. Cyrila a sv. Metoda). Hlavních jednání se kromě generálního vedení účastnila především olomoucká konsistoř zastoupená P. Gustavem Klugem, a pražská nunciatura. Každá ze sester provincie dostala právo rozhodnout se pro přestup. Německé sestry a část Češek (celkem 31) se rozhodla pro Vídeň, 57 sester však souhlasilo s plánovaným založením. Po hádkách o pačlavický velkostatek byl rozdělen i majetek a jednotlivé domy. Nacionální důvod vzniku nového řádu se nelíbil československé státní správě. Ministerstvo zahraničí intervenovalo u Svatého stolce s poukazem, že Československá republika novou kongregaci neschválí. Důvodem tohoto protiprávního jednání se mělo stát i nedostatečné hospodářské zajištění společenství. Řím nakonec rozhodl ponechat provincii českých řeholnic samostatnost a podřídit je přímo pod olomoucký ordinariát. Toto "provizorní", trvající až do roku 1995, umožnilo sestrám volit svou provinční představenou, zakládat nové domy, přijímat kandidátky a připouštět je ke slibům. Tehdejší spor vincentek byl reflektován v několika novinových článcích a skrze soukromí tisk Pamětního listu. Své stanovisko předložily veřejnosti i vysoce postaveným osobnostem (včetně prezidenta Tomáše G. Masaryka). Zkoumaná kongregace vykresluje jeden z případů nacionálních obtíží, kterými v různé intenzitě procházely jednotlivá řeholní společenství v první polovině 20. století.

Abstract:

The dissolution of the monarchy was followed by a nationalist dispute between some of the Czech nuns and the general leadership of the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul in Vienna. The main instigator of these efforts was purported to be Fr Josef Olšina. Vienna refused the separation of a part of the congregation as an act of mutilation; Superior Franz Hlawati later only acquiesced to the creation of a Czechoslovak province with its own novitiate in 1920. Two years later the nuns requested the foundation of an independent congregation of Czechoslovak Vincentians (with the approved title of Služebnice sv. Vincence, sv. Cyrila a sv. Metoda "Servants of St Vincent, St Cyril, and St Methodius"). Besides the general leadership, the main negotiations were mainly attended by the Olomouc consistory, represented by Fr Gustav Klug, and by the Prague nunciature. All of the sisters in the province were given the right to decide to make the move. The German nuns and some of the Czechs (31 in all) decided for Vienna, but the other 57 nuns agreed with the foundation of a new province as planned. After quarrels over the large Pačlavice farming estate, the property and individual houses were also divided. The Czechoslovak state administration did not like the nationalist reason for which the new religious order was established. The Czechoslovak Ministry of Foreign Affairs intervened at the Holy See, noting that the Czechoslovak Republic would not give its approval to the new congregation. The reasoning behind this illegal action also stemmed from the congregation's alleged lack of economic security. Rome decided to uphold the Czech province's independence and to append it directly to the Olomouc ordinariate. This "temporary" provision, which lasted until 1995, enabled the nuns to elect their provincial superior, to found new houses, to accept candidates and admit them to their vows. The Vincentian dispute was reflected in several contemporary newspaper articles and by the private printing of a "Commemorative Sheet" (Pamětní list). The nuns presented their views both to society at large and to high-ranking public figures (including President Tomáš G. Masaryk). The research illustrates one example of the nationalist difficulties that various religious orders had to cope with in various levels of intensity during the first half of the twentieth century.
