The Role of Religion in a Postmodern Society Demonstrated on Lena Gorelik's Novel "A Wedding in Jerusalem"

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the role of religion in a modern society as depicted in the novel by Lena Gorelik ?Hochzeit in Jerusalem? (Wedding in Jerusalem). Today?s role of religion, of Judaism in particular, is analyzed on the basis of applied theoretical knowledge of the subject. The attitude of individual characters to Judaism takes various forms in this novel. Based on the characteristics of their behaviour and their opinions, the literary characters present themselves as orthodox, liberal or conservative in their religious belief. It is the aim of this thesis to match the main characters to the individual movements of Judaism. The thesis also concentrates on cultural differences which come up as a consequence of the identity of the main character embracing Russian, Jewish and German elements.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá postavením náboženství v moderní společnosti v díle Leny Gorelik ?Hochzeit in Jerusalem?. Úloha náboženství v dnešní době, konkrétně židovství, je analyzována na základě teoreticky zpracovaných vědeckých poznatků. Samotný postoj k židovství se pak u jednotlivých postav díla promítá různorodě. Na základě charakteristiky jejich chování a zastávání názorů vystupují literární hrdinové tohoto díla buď jako ortodoxně, liberálně, nebo konzervativně věřící. Cílem práce je tedy přiřazení hlavních postav k jednotlivým směrům současného židovství. Pozornost je věnována i kulturním rozdílům, které vycházejí na povrch v důsledku rusko-židovsko-německé identity hlavní hrdinky románu.
