Photochemistry of persistent chemicals in solid matrices

Abstract:

Mnoho persistentních organických látek je předmětem dálkového transportu atmosférou, kdy u těchto látek docházi k depozici v odlehlých oblastech vysokých hor a polárních regionech. Výskyt polutantů závisí na distribuci jejich zdrojů, pohybu větrných mas, rovnováze mezi vzduchem a zemským povrchem a na řadě chemických transformací. Cílem této práce bylo studium environmentálních procesů a fotochemických transformací organických polutantů v tuhých matricích ledu a sněhu v laboratorních podmínkách. Těmito procesy jsou myšleny především sorpce, těkání – mezifázová výměna, migrace a různé typy chemických přeměn, které zahrnují i fotochemické transformace. Studium fotochemie v ledu bylo provedeno na třech modelových látkách: fenolu, anisolu a 4-methoxyfenolu v přítomnosti dusitanů a dusičnanů, přičemž hlavním cílem bylo nalézt fotoprodukty a vysvětlit mechanismy reakcí. Jako hlavní typy reakcí byly určeny nitrace a hydroxylace, protože bylo zjištěno, že aromatické látky ve výsledku fungují jako lapače HO· a NOx· radikálů, jež vznikají v důsledku nitrátové fotolýzy. Je tedy možné uvažovat o vzniku nitrovaných polutantů i v polárních oblastech. Část této práce se zabývá laboratorní simulací důležitých procesů odehrávajících se v životním prostředí, umožňující lepší pochopení těchto dějů. Pro tyto účely byla proto zavedena nová metodika. Jako modelové látky pro experimenty byly vybrány PCB 7 a PCB 153, přičemž byla snaha pracovat s koncentracemi běžně se vyskytujícími v životním prostředí. Optimalizace analytických metod proběhla s reálnými vzorky sněhu a pro účely fotochemických studií byly vzorky sněhu vyráběny z roztoku o definované koncentraci rozprašováním do kapalného dusíku. Práce se sněhem probíhala v uzavřeném systému, kde si mohly konkurovat dva procesy, a to fotoredukční reakce a desorpce z povrchu krystalků sněhu. Jedním z cílů bylo zjistit, v jakém rozsahu dochází k jednomu či druhému procesu. V tomto případě byla identifikována jako hlavní fotodegradační cesta dehalogenace chlorovaných bifenylů. Pomocí pokusů v deuterované vodě byly molekuly vody ve sněhu vyloučeny jako zdroj vodíkového atomu; naopak jako nejpravděpodobnější zdroj byly zjištěny těkavé uhlovodíky, což potvrdily experimenty s deuterovanými látkami, d6-ethanolem a d8-tetrahydrofuranem. Další část práce se týká stanovení hladin persistentních polutantů ve vzorcích půd a sedimentů v polární oblasti Antarktidy na Ostrově Jamese Rosse, v místě, kde byla vybudována první česká polární stanice, za účelem zjištění míry znečištění a možnosti provádění zmíněných fotochemických pokusů v reálném prostředí. Ve dvaceti vzorcích půd a sedimentů byly stanoveny koncentrace polychlorovaných bifenylů, polycyklických kondenzovaných uhlovodíků a chlorovaných pesticidů. Převaha polutantů s nižší molekulovou hmotností, méněchlorovaných bifenylů a přítomnost více těkavých pesticidů naznačuje způsob vzniku kontaminace ostrova formou dálkového transportu z oblastí Afriky, Jižní Ameriky a Austrálie. Atmosférický zdroj znečištění půd a sedimentů byl potvrzen odběrem vzorků vzduchu pomocí pasivních vzorkovacích zařízení.

Abstract:

Many persistent and toxic organic compounds are the subject of long-range atmospheric transport and deposition in the area of high mountains and polar regions. The atmospheric pathway of a contaminant is dependent on the distribution of its sources globally, air circulation patterns, exchange between air and the Earth’s surface, and many chemical transformations. The aim of this project was the study of environmental processes and photochemical transformations of organic pollutants in solid matrices of ice and snow in the laboratory conditions. It includes processes like sorption, evaporation – phase exchange, migration and many kinds of chemical changes as photochemical transformations. The study of photochemistry in ice matrix of three model organic aromatic compounds, phenol, anisole, or 4-methoxyphenol, in the presence of nitrite or nitrate was investigated. Generally, the main goal was to find the photoproducts and to explain mechanisms of reactions. Two main reactions, nitration and hydroxylation, were found to occur at the grain boundaries of polycrystalline ice. It is demonstrated that the aromatic molecules served as traps for HO· and NOx· which are the result of nitrate photolysis. Furthermore, possible photochemically induced formation of highly mutagenic or carcinogenic nitro- or nitrosoaromatic compounds in the polar regions is considered. The next part of this work deals with the laboratory simulation of important processes occurring in the environment and allowing better understanding of these processes. For that reason a new methodology was established. PCB 7 and PCB 153 were chosen as model compounds and the first laboratory study of their photochemical behavior in snow at environmentally relevant concentrations are presented here. The aim was to find out the importance of processes. In this case, the main photodegradation pathway was found to be reductive dehalogenation. Possible involvement of the water molecules from snow in this reaction has been excluded by performing the photolyses in D2O snow. Instead, trace amounts of volatile organic compounds have been proposed to be the major source of hydrogen atom in the reduction, and this hypothesis was confirmed by the experiments with deuterated organic co-contaminants, such as d6-ethanol or d8-tetrahydrofuran. The last part of this work concerns the persistent pollutants levels in soil and sediment samples from the James Ross Island, Antarctica, where the first Czech polar station was established. There was an effort to find out the extent of pollution and the possibility to conduct photochemical experiments in real conditions. Twenty soil and sediment samples were analyzed for their PCB, OCP and PAH contents. Prevalence of light-weight polyaromatic hydrocarbons, less chlorinated PCB congeners and more volatile chemicals indicates that the long range atmospheric transport from populated areas of Africa, South America, and Australia is the most probable source of contamination of the solid environmental matrices on the James Ross Island. To confirm the atmospheric origin of the soil and sediment contamination, the samples of the ambient air were collected using five passive air samplers.
