Emotional Intelligence and Ego Defense Mechanisms in Offenders

Abstract:

V diplomové práci se zabýváme tématem emoční inteligence a obranných mechanismů u pachatelů trestné činnosti. Cílem je provést sondu do oblasti emoční inteligence a obranných mechanismů v českém vězeňském prostředí. Chtěli jsme zjistit, zda se od sebe pachatelé liší ve schopnosti emoční inteligence a také prozkoumat jejich obranné mechanismy. Výzkumný vzorek čítalo celkem 63 odsouzených ve věku od 19 do 65 let. Využili jsme dvě metody pro měření emoční inteligence: Situational Test of Emotional Management (STEM) a Situational Test of Emotional Understanding (STEU), kterými porovnáváme emoční porozumění a emoční management. Avšak STEM ve vzorku nedosahovala dostatečné vnitřní konzistence, je tedy nutné výsledky ověřit v dalších výzkumech. Na základě těchto testů jsme zjistili, že odsouzení za násilné a nenásilné trestné činy se v emoční inteligenci neliší. Stejně tak se v tomto aspektu neliší recidivisté od prvotrestanců. Dále jsme sledovali emoční management tří emocí – vzteku, strachu a smutku. Bylo zjištěno, že pachatelé nejméně zvládají vztek, o něco lépe strach a nejlépe se jim daří vypořádat se se smutkem. Rozdíl mezi všemi emocemi byl statistiky významný. Dále se výzkum věnuje ego obranným mechanismům, resp. obraným stylům. Pro zjišťování obranných mechanismů jsme použili dotazník Defense Style Questionnaire 40 (DSQ 40). Ukázalo se, že odsouzení využívají zralé obranné mechanismy ve stejné míře jako běžná mužská populace. Rozdíly se však projevovaly v obranných mechanismech neurotických a nezralých. Vězni, v porovnání s běžnou populací, statisticky významně více využívají maladaptivní mechanismy obrany ega.

Abstract:

This thesis occupies the fields of emotional intelligence and ego defense mechanisms in offenders. The aim of this research is to explore area of emotional intelligence and defese mechanism in Czech prison environment. We explored if offenders differ in ability emotional intelligence and if there is difference between normal population and population of offenders in defense mechanisms. In research sample there are 63 custodial sentenced adult males (19-65 years). In research we applied two methods of emotional intelligence: Situational Test of Emotional Management (STEM) and Situational Test of Emotional Understanding (STEU). These tests are focused on two branches of emotional intelligence: emotional management and understanding. According to the STEM and STEU we found out that there is no difference between violent and non-violent offenders in emotional intelligence neither between first offenders and recidivists. In offenders we also observed management of three emotions - anger, fear and sadness. There is statistically significant distinction in management of these three emotions. We found out the poorest management of anger, better of fear and the best management of sadness. STEM did not reach sufficient internal consistency in our sample so we suggest verifying these results in additional study. We also explored ego defense mechanisms and defense styles via Defense Style Questionnaire 40 (DSQ 40). The results show that offenders and normal population use mature defense mechanisms comparably. However, offenders use neurotic and immature defense mechanisms more than normal population. We can say that offenders use more maladaptive ego defense mechanisms than normal population.
