Representation of the 2007 visit of George Bush of Czech Republic in the Czech Media (content analysis)

Abstract:

Bakalářská diplomová práce se zabývá mediálním obrazem návštěvy amerického prezidenta George Bushe v České republice, která se uskutečnila v červnu 2007. Cílem práce je popsat, jakým způsobem referovaly o návštěvě vybrané české celostátní deníky – Blesk, Hospodářské noviny, Lidové noviny, Mladá fronta DNES a Právo. Úvodní část práce představuje teoretické koncepty žurnalistiky a mediálních studií ve vztahu ke zkoumané události. Pozornost je věnována například výkladu mediální události a objektivity, zpravodajským hodnotám, roli jazyka ve zpravodajství a moderním trendům ve vývoji žurnalistiky. Empirickou část práce tvoří kvantitativní obsahová analýza vydání sledovaných deníků v období 28. května – 8. června 2007. Nástin mediálního obrazu návštěvy doplňuje kvalitativní interpretace vybraných textů zaměřená na titulky, úvodní odstavce zpravodajských textů a komentáře.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis Representation of the 2007 visit of George Bush of Czech Republic in the Czech Media deals with the media image of the visit of the U.S. President George Bush to the Czech Republic in June 2007. The goal of this thesis is to describe the way the visit was reported in the selected Czech national daily newspapers — Blesk, Hospodářské noviny, Lidové noviny, Mladá fronta DNES and Právo. The first part focuses on the theory of journalism and media studies in relation to the surveyed event with an attention paid to the media events, objectivity, news values, role of the language in the news, and recent trends in the development of journalism. The empirical part consists of a quantitative content analysis of the monitored newspapers between May 28, 2007 and June 8, 2007. The outline of the media image of the George Bush’s visits is completed with a qualitative interpretation focused on the headlines, first paragraphs of the news articles, and commentaries.
