"Revenge Should Have No Bounds": An Analysis of Three Renaissance Revenge Tragedy Plays

Anotace:

Tato bakalářská práce analyzuje tři díla z anglického dramatu, přesněji z renesanční tragédie pomsty z alžbětinského období. Pro pochopení tragédie pomsty a jejího původu začne tato práce s vysvětlením žánru, společně s vysvětlením její historie a důvodem její popularity. Poté budou tři díla, Španělská tragédie, Hamlet a Mstitelova tragédie analyzovány a jejich příběhy budou podrobně vysvětleny. Nato budou předvedeny nejčastěji užívané tropy těchto tří děl, a bude vytvořen modelový příklad dramatu tragédie pomsty.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to analyse three pieces of British drama, namely the revenge tragedies of the Renaissance era. To understand what a revenge tragedy is and where it came from, this thesis will start with an explanation of the genre together with its history and its popularity. Afterward, the three plays, The Spanish Tragedy, Hamlet, and The Revenger’s Tragedy will be analysed, the plot of these plays will be thoroughly explained. Once this will be done, the most used tropes that were used throughout these plays will be given and a model of a revenge tragedy play will be created.
