Research concerning the role of grammar in teaching German as a foreign language at Czech basic schools.

Abstract:

Core topic of this work is German grammar and grammar knowledge of the students in final classes of basic schools. Even though nowadays we incline in language teaching mainly to communicative methods and the grammar cease to count; grammar is still necessary for correct communication and thus it has irreplaceable role in German language teaching. The goal of my work is investigation of output grammar knowledge of the students in ninth classes from different types of basic schools and comparison of this knowledge with demands given in valid curricular documents. Even curricular documents went through long development which I demonstrated by analyze of grammar curricula starting 1970. However grammar is not the only field with which language teaching is concerned by so it is also necessary to find out general language level of the students according to Common European Language Framework. Student achievements are influenced by different factors to which the teacher also belongs. Another goal was therefore to investigate whether the teacher´s attitude to grammar influences grammar knowledge of the students. In the theoretic part of the work I concerned with the conception grammar with its place in education and its importance in teaching methods and with the possibilities of its teaching. As next in the practice part I did research work through the use of didactic testing, analyzing and questioning. First I analyzed curricula since 1970 in grammar field; quantitative changes as well as qualitative. Next I investigated through the use of testing grammar as well as general knowledge of German language of the students in ninth classes at standard basic schools, at basic schools with classes with extended language teaching, at basic language schools and at Czech {--}German grammar school. These (knowledge) I compared with valid curricular documents. Through the use of questionnaire I investigated the attitude to the grammar of the teachers in tested classes and thus the influence to student{\crq}s knowledge. After the accomplishment of the research I found that knowledge of the students at Czech basic schools are at very low level and they do not correspond with the demands given in curricula. The quantity of demands in curricula has risen considerably according to analyze and that might influence according to my opinion such a low not only grammar but also general knowledge level. According to teacher{\crq}s responses to the questionnaire and followed comparison with the students knowledge I found that teachers attitude to grammar has no major influence to the quality of grammar knowledge. The best results were obtained by the students of Czech-German grammar school and the lowest results were obtained by the students of standard basic schools. This result was expected; however it is startling that found results especially at the students at standard basic schools as well as language schools do not correspond with the curricula in such a large extent. Found results are really alarming. We should consider the place of German language in basic education. Not only due to the fact that we are surrounded from more than a half by German speaking countries but also due to the fact that education of German language has the same tradition as education of firs foreign language English and German plays important role in our country in the field of economy, business as well as tourism and others.

Ústředním tématem této práce je gramatika německého jazyka a gramatické znalosti žáků výstupních ročníků základních škol. Ačkoliv se v dnešní době při výuce jazyka inklinuje především ke komunikativním metodám a oblast gramatiky ustupuje do pozadí, je nezbytná pro korektní komunikaci a tudíž má nezastupitelnou roli ve výuce německého jazyka.. Cílem mé práce je zjištění výstupních gramatických znalostí žáků devátých ročníků různých typů základních škol a porovnání těchto znalostí s požadavky danými v platných curicurálních dokumentech. I curiculární dokumenty prošly dlouhým vývojem, který jsem znázornila analýzou učebních osnov v oblasti mluvnice od roku 1970. Gramatika však není jedinou oblastí, kterou se zabývá výuka cizích jazyků a proto je nezbytné zjistit i obecnou úroveň žáků dle Společného evropského referenčního rámce pro jazyky. Výkony žáků jsou ovlivňovány různými faktory mezi které patří i samotný učitel. Dalším cílem bylo tedy zjistit, zda-li postoj učitele právě ke gramatice ovlivňuje gramatické znalosti žáků. V teoretické části práce se zabývám pojmem gramatika, jejím postavením ve výuce v současné době, jejím významem v učebních metodách a možnostmi její výuky. Následně jsem provedla v praktické části samotný výzkum pomocí didaktického testování, analyzování a dotazování. Nejprve jsem analyzovala učební osnovy od roku 1970 v oblasti mluvnice, změny jak kvantitativní tak kvalitativní. Dále jsem pomocí testování zjišťovala gramatické a poté i všeobecné znalosti německého jazyka u žáků devátých tříd na klasických základních školách, základních školách s třídami s rozšířenou výukou jazyků, základních jazykových školách a česko-německém gymnáziu. Ty jsem porovnala s platnými curicurálními dokumenty. Pomocí dotazníků jsem zjišťovala postoj učitelů německého jazyka testovaných tříd ke gramatice a tím i vliv na znalosti žáků. Po provedení výzkumu jsem došla k závěru, že znalosti žáků na českých základních školách jsou na velmi nízké úrovni a neodpovídají požadavkům stanoveným v učebních osnovách. Kvantita požadavků se na základě analýzy učebních dokumentů velmi zvýšila a to může dle mého názoru mít vliv na tak nízkou úroveň znalostí nejen gramatických, ale i obecných. Podle odpovědí učitelů na dotazník a následné porovnání se znalostmi žáků jsem došla k závěru, že na kvalitu gramatických znalostí nemá zásadní vliv postoj učitelů ke gramatice. Nejlepších výsledků v německém jazyce získali žáci Česko-německého gymnázia a nejnižších žáci klasických základních škol. Tento výsledek byl očekávaný, ale že zjištěné výsledky hlavně u žáků na klasických základních školách a i na jazykových školách nebudou odpovídat požadavkům v tak velké míře je zarážející. Zjištěné výsledky jsou vskutku alarmující. Měli bychom se zamyslet nad postavením německého jazyka v základním školství. Nejen proto, že jsme obklopeni z více jak poloviny německy mluvícími zeměmi, ale i proto, že výuka německého jazyka má stejnou tradici jako výuka prvního cizího jazyka {\clq}angličtiny` a němčina hraje v naší zemi v oblasti hospodářství, podnikání, ale i cestovním ruchu aj. důležitou roli.
