Analysis of the impact of covid on unemployment in individual regions of the Czech Republic after 2020

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá vlivem covidové pandemie a s ní souvisejících opatření na trhy práce a nezaměstnanost v České republice na počátku dvacátých let 21. století. Dopady na nezaměstnanost jsou sledovány v jednotlivých regionech ČR. Analýza, která měla potvrdit nebo vyvrátit centrální hypotézu, je provedena na základě dat ze všech 14 krajů České republiky. Ty byly rozděleny podle míry nezaměstnanosti, již měly před nástupem pandemie, a to do kategorie krajů s nízkou a vysokou nezaměstnaností. Podle centrální hypotézy v regionech s nižší předcovidovou mírou nezaměstnanosti došlo k vyššímu nárůstu nezaměstnanosti než v regionech s původně vyšší mírou nezaměstnanosti. Za pomoci vícenásobné regresní analýzy, metodou nejmenších čtverců byla hypotéza testována a následně zamítnuta. K vyššímu nárůstu nezaměstnanosti došlo v regionech s původně vyšší předcovidovou nezaměstnaností. Sekundární hypotéza říká, že covid postihl větší podíl nezaměstnaných žen než mužů v krajích, které vykazovaly nižší nezaměstnanost před covidem, než v krajích s vyšší nezaměstnaností. Daná hypotéza je testována pomocí metody differences-in-differences a je následně zamítnuta.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the impact of the covid pandemic and related measures on labour markets and unemployment in the Czech Republic in the early 2000s. The effects on unemployment are observed in individual regions of the Czech Republic. The analysis, designed to confirm or refute the central hypothesis, is based on data from all 14 regions of the Czech Republic. They were divided according to the level of unemployment they had before the pandemic, into low and high unemployment regions. According to the central hypothesis, regions with lower pre-pandemic unemployment rates experienced higher increases in unemployment than regions with initially higher unemployment rates. Using multiple regression analysis, the least squares method, the hypothesis was tested and subsequently rejected. The higher increase in unemployment occurred in regions with initially higher pre-Covidian unemployment rates. The secondary hypothesis states that covid affected a larger proportion of unemployed women than men in regions that had lower pre-covid unemployment than in regions with higher unemployment. This hypothesis is tested using the differences-in-differences method and is subsequently rejected
