Comparison of Modern Theories of the Balance of Payments adjustment mechanisms

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá teoriemi vyrovnávacích mechanismů platební bilance. Jednotlivě prezentované teorie porovnává s vyrovnávacími mechanismy platební bilance České republiky v období 1993 -- 2012. V práci se pracuje zejména s monetárním a keynesovským přístupem k platební bilanci, důchodovým, kurzovým, a monetárním vyrovnávacím mechanismem, a v neposlední řadě s reálným měnovým kurzem a paritou kupní síly. Ke znázornění souvislostí teorií a reality jsou využívány metody indukce a dedukce - vždy tak, aby z nich byly zřetelné jejich spojitosti či naopak sporná místa. U všech teorií jsou vysvětlovány jejich hlavní principy fungování a následně je zhodnocováno, zda-li je možno využít je pro popis a vysvětlení vývoje platební bilance ČR. Práce obsahuje řadu tabulek a grafů, které jsou často výchozími body pro posouzení míry relevantnosti jednotlivých teorií.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the theories of the balance of payments adjustment mechanisms. Individually presented theories are compared with adjustment mechanisms of the Czech Republic in the period 1993 -- 2012. In the paper, especially the monetary and Keynesian approaches to the balance of payments are applied. There are used income adjustment mechanism, exchange rate adjustment mechanism and monetary adjustment mechanism or real exchange rate and purchasing power parity as well. To show the connections between the theories and the reality the methods of induction and deduction are applied, always in the way to emphasize, whether the real development and theoretical interpretation are aligned or not. In case of all the theories, there are explained their main principles and subsequently it is assessed, whether they can be used to describe and explain sufficiently the development of the balance of payments of the Czech Republic. The paper includes a series of tables and diagrams that are often the starting base for assessing the relevance of individual theories.
