Seniors education to media literacy

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá mediální gramotností seniorů. Práce je členěna do dvou hlavních částí, má tedy teoreticko-empirický charakter. Teoretická část práce přibližuje základní terminologii použitou v obou částech práce, zaměřuje se na média, mediální gramotnost a na seniory jako na mediální publikum. Druhá kapitola teoretické části této práce je věnována mediálnímu vzdělávání v České republice se specifickým zaměřením na mediální vzdělávání a na výchovu seniorů. V empirické části práce je prezentován výzkum realizovaný v průběhu tvorby této práce. Výzkum má kvalitativní design. Jeho cílem zjistit, zda mají senioři zájem o mediální vzdělávání a zda vnímají možná rizika nízké mediální gramotnosti. Výzkumná data získaná metodou rozhovorů, životních příběhů a terénních poznámek výzkumníka jsou analyzována narativním způsobem. Respondenti potvrzují, že v mediálním vzdělávání stojí vzdělávací bariéry především na straně seniorů. Senioři se také shodují na jisté míře nezájmu o mediální gramotnost jako o edukační téma.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the media literacy education of seniors. The thesis is divided into two main sections and is, therefore, of theoretical-empirical nature. The theoretical part of the thesis is dedicated to the basic terminology used throughout the text and focuses on the media, media literacy, and seniors as members of the mass media audience. The second chapter of the theoretical part of the thesis examines the current state of media education in the Czech Republic, focusing specifically on the media education of seniors. The empirical part of the thesis presents a survey realised throughout the preparation phase of the thesis itself. The presented survey is qualitative in design. It aims to answer the question of whether seniors consider media education a relevant field of study and whether they realize the potential risks linked with a low media literacy score. The data presented in the survey was obtained through the methods of interviews, life stories, and the author's own observations. The obtained information is then analysed and presented in a narrative manner. The respondents confirm the hypothesis that there exists a barrier on the seniors' own side which prevents them from participating in media literacy education. Furthermore, there appears to be mutual agreement among the respondents on varying levels of disinterest in media literacy as a topic within the field of education.
