„Crime Fiction Investigation“: A Crime Television Series’ Fictional Semantics Proposal

Abstract:

Práce sleduje dva cíle: Za prvé chce navrhnout nový model myšlení o kriminálním televizním seriálu, a to z pozic fikční sémantiky, konkrétněji pak narativní sémantiky fikčních světů. Za druhé by měla poukázat, že fikční sémantika nabízí pro naratologická zkoumání televizních seriálů řadu užitečných nástrojů, jak se nově vypořádat se specifiky vyprávění v tomto médiu, aniž by bylo třeba opouštět přístupy popsané dosavadním naratologickým bádáním. Rozvíjí tezi, že kriminální fikce nabízí specifický typ uspořádání fikčního světa, které je organizováno množstvím jasně stanovených narativních pravidel. Na jejím základě pak navrhuje fikční sémantiku kriminálního seriálu, ve které zavádí trojici nových pojmů: subsvěta (který definuje v jiném významu, než mu byl dosud přikládán), mediátora a vizuálních zaměření. Pomocí nich potom studie popisuje fikční specifika kriminálního seriálu: sémantickou makrostrukturu fikčního světa, vztahy mezi jeho subsvěty a mezi fikčními světy epizod, řízení jednotlivých částí různými narativními modalitami (termín Lubomíra Doležela). V závěru pak zhodnocuje užitečnost tohoto modelu a nových pojmů při aplikaci na jiné typy televizní seriálové fikce než kriminální. Práce metodicky vychází z konceptů sémantiků fikčních světů Lubomíra Doležela, Umberta Eca, Marie-Laure Ryanové, Ruth Ronenové a filmových teoretiků Davida Bordwella a Christiana Metze.

Abstract:

This thesis is aimed at two goals: Firstly, it is meant to propose new model of thoughts about crime television series, mainly by the means of fictional semantics, in the concrete than by means of narrative semantics of fictional worlds. Secondly, it should be able to refer to fictional semantics as useful set of tools for narratological inquiries of television series, while at the same time it should point to the new ways of dealing with specifics of this media storytelling. Without the need of leaving the approaches described in up to now narratological observations. It devolops the notion that crime fiction offers specific patterning of fictional world, which is organized by numbers of obviously given narrative rules. On their grounds, this thesis than suggests fictional semantics of crime television series and its triad of new terms: subworld (bearing different meanings in opposite to earlier explanations), mediator and visual alignment. By the help of these terms fictional semantics describes specifics of crime television series: semantic macrostructure of fictional world, relations between subworlds and fictional worlds of episodes, governing of separate parts by different narrative modalities (Lubomír Doležel’s therm). At the close, this thesis evaluates the usefulness of presented model and its new terms by application to other kinds of television fiction series. Methodology of this thesis draws upon concepts of narrative semantics of fictional worlds as developed by Lubomír Doležel, Umberto Eco, Marie-Laure Ryan, Ruth Ronen and on the work of film theorists such as David Bordwell and Christian Metz.
