Naturalism and its aspects in the novella "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to situate John Steinbeck's novella Of Mice and Men (1937) in the tradition of American realism and chiefly naturalism. It introduces the American naturalism, especially American naturalism of the 1930s and mentions some naturalists of that time. The main content of the thesis is Steinbeck's concept of naturalism in the novella Of Mice and Men and highlighting its individual naturalistic elements. The work focuses on the nature of the characters in the novella and their relationship to the environment and circumstances that are presented in the novella.

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je zasadit novelu O Myších a Lidech (1937) od autora Johna Steinbecka do tradice amerického realismu a zejména naturalismu. Tato práce představuje americký naturalismus, zejména pak americký naturalismus 30. let a zmiňuje některé zástupce tohoto směru této doby. Hlavním obsahem práce je Steinbeckovo pojetí naturalismu v krátké novele O Myších a Lidech a vyzdvižení jednotlivých naturalistických prvků, které se v díle nachází. Práce se zaměřuje na charakter postav novely a jejich vztah k prostředí a okolnostem, které jsou v novele prezentovány.
