Modal particle

Abstract:

My master's thesis is divided into two parts – a theoretical and practical part. In the theoretical part, I mainly deal with particles in general, their classification according to various studies, their terminologies both in Czech and German and, in the end, I compare the terminology and classification in both languages. I focus on the category of modal particles. In the practical part, I deal with the modal particle “ja”, in particular with its function, its position in sentence, as well as its equivalents in Czech. The aim of my thesis is to find out which counterparts German sentences with the particle “ja” have in Czech; how a certain content is expressed in German and Czech, and how the attitude (and what attitude) of a speaker is presented in both languages. As for the source of the language material, I used the parallel corpus InterCorp, which enabled me to find 1,000 of German parallels containing the particle “ja” in a random selection. I investigated the position of the particle in sentence and its Czech parallel. I focused on how the attitude of a speaker is expressed in the Czech parallel – whether there is an equivalent particle or the parallel contains another or no language means which reflects this attitude. I created a base for statistical evaluation by ordering the parallel material according to the function and Czech counterparts.

Abstract:

Moje diplomová práce je rozdělena do dvou částí, teoretické a praktické. V teoretické části se zabývám částicemi obecně, jejich klasifikací dle různých gramatických publikací, jejich terminologií v češtině a v němčině, nakonec pak terminologii a klasifikaci v obou jazycích porovnám. Zaměřuji se na kategorii modálních částic. V praktické části se blíže zabývám modální částicí „ja“, zejména pak její funkcí, postavením ve větě a samozřejmě jejími ekvivalenty v českém jazyce. Cílem mé práce je zjistit, jaké protějšky mají německé věty s částicí „ja“ v češtině, tedy jak vyjadřuje určitý obsah němčina a jak čeština, jak se projevuje postoj mluvčího (příp. jaký postoj) k ději v obou jazycích. Jako zdroj jazykového materiálu jsem použila paralelní korpus InterCorp, s jehož pomocí jsem náhodným výběrem získala 1.000 německých paralel, které obsahují částici „ja“. Zkoumala jsem postavení této partikule ve větě a její českou paralelu. Zaměřila jsem se na to, jak je v české paralele vyjádřen postoj mluvčího - zda se tam vyskytuje ekvivalentní partikule nebo zda paralela obsahuje jiný, popř. žádný jazykový prostředek, jež tento postoj reflektuje. Seřazením paralelního materiálu podle funkce a českých protějšků jsem vytvořila podklad pro statistické vyhodnocení.
