YouTube clothing hauls: Their structure and characteristic linguistic features

Abstract:

The aim of the present bachelor thesis is to analyse YouTube clothing hauls that provide the audience with a presentation of products, especially clothes, shoes and accessories, purchased by the creator. The analysis focuses on the characteristic linguistic features of the videos, their discourse structure, and the micro-celebrity and self-branding practices utilised within them. In the analytical part, the dataset consisting of two transcripts of videos created by a British YouTuber called Roxxsaurus is subjected to discourse analysis. The results show that clothing hauls are characterised by the utilisation of fashion lexicon accompanied by deixis and anaphoric reference, and a rigid structure consisting of the introduction, the presentation of products, and the leave-taking. Furthermore, the analysis revealed that, within the videos, a celebrity identity is constructed through exhibiting certain beneficial traits, sharing personal information and shortcomings, and interaction with the audience. Subsequently, the persona is further promoted by self-branding strategies to increase social media engagement in a form of subscribers, views, or comments.

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je analýza YouTube videí, tzv. clothing hauls, v nichž youtubeři prezentují zakoupené produkty, a to zejména oblečení, boty a módní doplňky. Analýza se zaměřuje na jejich charakteristické jazykové znaky, diskurzivní strukturu a současně také na využití osobního brandingu a mikro-celebritních strategií. V rámci analytické části byl diskurzivní analýze podroben dataset, skládající se z transkripcí dvou videí britské youtuberky jménem Roxxsaurus. Výsledky dokazují, že pro clothing hauls je charakteristická utilizace módního lexikonu, doprovázeného deiktickými výrazy nebo anaforou, a rigidní struktura, jež se skládá z úvodu, prezentace produktů, a loučení. Analýza mimoto ukázala, že je ve videích identita úspěšné celebrity budována prostřednictvím přínosných vlastností, sdílením osobních informací a nedostatků, a interakcí s diváky. Následně je tato persóna propagována pomocí osobního brandingu, za účelem navýšení počtu odběratelů, zhlédnutí, a komentářů na sociálních sítích.
