Life story and identity of adolescents of children's home

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was to explore identity through life story of adolescents living in children`s home. The research sample included 11 adolescents living in children`s home. The analysis of autobiographical narratives was based on McAdam`s (1988) concept of identity as a life story, which differentiates the key events, perspective orientations, self-image, values and beliefs. Statements relating to the family, children`s home and titles of narratives were mapped. It was found that children`s home has become a part of identity of adolescents of children`s homes. The key events are represented by events related to hobbies, dreams about the future and professions, experiences out of home and children`s home. There are positive and negative events included. The perspective orientations are constituted by dreams about future professions and pleasant experiences, and the minority mentions elaborated desires about the future and his or her own family. Self-images are influenced by hobbies and what they want to be. Value chain consists of family life, wealth, professionalism, imagination, wishes, doing what they like and helping others. Statements about the family are related to the number of siblings, visits and holidays. The family is associated with crisis situations and parents do not figure in positive experiences, but other members do. Children`s home is described mainly in terms of length of their stay. Titles of narratives form the meaningful names of the entire stories. Conclusions of the research should be taken with caution and regard to the character of narrative research.

Abstract:

Cieľom diplomovej práce bolo preskúmanie identity pomocou životného príbehu adolescentov žijúcich v detskom domove. Výskumný súbor tvorilo 11 adolescentov detského domova. Analýza autobiografických rozprávaní vychádzala z McAdamsovej (1988) koncepcie identity ako životného príbehu, ktorá diferencuje kľúčové udalosti, perspektívne zamerania, sebaobrazy, hodnoty a presvedčenia. Zmapované boli výroky vzťahujúce sa k rodine, detskému domovu a názvom príbehov. Bolo zistené, že detský domov sa stal súčasťou identity adolescentov detských domovov. Medzi kľúčovými udalosťami sú zastúpené udalosti súvisiace so záľubami, snami o budúcnosti a povolaní, zážitkami mimo domov i detský domov. Obsiahnuté sú pozitívne i negatívne udalosti. Perspektívne zamerania tvoria úvahy o vysnívaných povolaniach a budúcich pekných zážitkoch, pričom menšina uvádza detailnejšie premyslené túžby o budúcnosti i vlastnej rodine. Sebaobrazy sú ovplyvnené záľubami a tým, čím chcú byť. Hodnotový rebríček tvorí rodinný život, bohatstvo, profesionalita, fantázia, priania, robenie toho, čo človeka baví a pomoc druhým. Výroky o rodine sa vzťahujú k počtu súrodencov, ďalej návštevám a prázdninám. Rodina sa dáva do súvislosti s krízovými situáciami a v pozitívnych zážitkoch nefigurujú rodičia, ale iní členovia. Detský domov popisovali hlavne z hľadiska dĺžky pobytu. Názvy príbehov boli utvorené tak, aby tvorili zmysluplné pomenovanie celého príbehu. Závery výskumnej práce je potrebné brať opatrne a s ohľadom na povahu naratívneho výskumu.
