P: Faded Flames – The Fate of Greek Catholic Churches in the Poland communist era

Abstract:

Název projektu odkazuje na tvar kopule kostela v rusínském typu symbolizující hořící plamen svíčky. Fotografie ukazují bývalé řeckokatolické církve transformované na římskokatolické církve v období Polské lidové republiky. Odchod jihovýchodního Polska stoupenci byzantského obřadu byl podmíněn několika klíčovými událostmi. Prvním byl etnický konflikt mezi Poláky a Ukrajinci, který začal v posledních dvou letech druhé světové války. Dalším z nich bylo nucené vyhoštění Ukrajinců z polských území do SSSR, prováděné v letech 1944-1946. Další negativní dopad na stav řeckokatolické církve v Polské lidové republice měla kampaň Visly, represe úřadů PRL a do určité míry zákaz tohoto náboženství v Polsku a dalších východních zemích Blok. Odhaduje se, že podle různých zdrojů bylo v Polsku 540 až 689 řeckokatolických kostelů, z nichž asi 166 bylo přeneseno do kostela latinského obřadu, 188 bylo rozebráno, 33 bylo převzato státními statky a asi 140 chátral.

Abstract:

Roman Catholic churches during the period of the Polish People's Republic. The departure of southeastern Poland by the followers of the Byzantine Rite was conditioned by several key events. The first was the ethnic conflict between Poles and Ukrainians that began in the last two years of World War II. Another was the forced expulsion of Ukrainians from Polish territories to the USSR, carried out between 1944 and 1946. Another negative impact on the state of the Greek Catholic Church in the People's Republic of Poland was the Vistula campaign, the repression of the authorities of the People's Republic of Poland and to some extent the banning of this religion in Poland and other Eastern Bloc countries. According to various sources, it is estimated that there were between 540 and 689 Greek Catholic churches in Poland, of which about 166 were transferred to the Latin rite, 188 were dismantled, 33 were taken over by state estates and about 140 fell into disrepair.
