The reflection of the Deepwater Horizon accident on news websites of selected US media

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je prozkoumat, jakým způsobem americká média informovala o průběhu havárie těžební plošiny Deepwater Horizon a následně vzniklé ropné skvrně. Hlavním zájmem práce je nastolování environmentálních témat v médiích a rámování environmentálních katastrof. Tato oblast je u nás i ve světě velmi málo zmapovaná, práce se zabývá i změnou postojů veřejnosti k problému znečištění Mexického zálivu, kterou mohla způsobit média rámováním události. Můj výzkum, který se opírá o sociální konstrukci reality a teorii nastolování agendy, srovnával rozdíly mezi dvěma odlišnými médii – zpravodajskými portály CNN a FOX v průběhu času. Analýza byla provedena na 103 článcích uveřejněných ve dvou zvolených obdobích. V rámci práce byly srovnávány rozdíly ve způsobu rámování havárie a délce článků. Výsledky ukázaly některé zajímavé rozdíly mezi zkoumanými médii a jsou diskutovány.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to explore the ways in which American media informed about the disaster of Deepwater Horizon drilling rig and the following oil spill. The main focus of the thesis concerns agenda setting for environmental topics in media and media framing of environmental disasters. Only limited attention has been paid to this field of study by our country as well as worldwide. This work also deals with the change of public attitude towards the issue of gulf oil spill pollution. This change of attitude could be caused by the transformation in the media framing of the disaster. While the theoretical backbone of the work presents theory of social construction of reality and the concept of agenda setting, the research compares two very different media - channels CNN and FOX in the progression of time. The analysis was conducted on as many as 103 articles, which were published during two elected periods of time. Within the thesis, especially the media framing of the crisis and the length of articles were compared. Results have shown some interesting differences in the particular field of media analysis.
