The artistic adaptations of the biblical Book of Esther

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je provést komparativní analýzu biblické knihy Ester s jejími filmovými adaptacemi z roku 1960 (Esther and the King), 1999 (Esther), 2006 (Noc s králem) a 2013 (The Book of Esther). Prostřednictvím analýzy je poukázáno na hlavní rozdíly a podobnosti jednotlivých verzí s knižní předlohou. Práce je členěna do několika částí. V úvodu je popsána kniha Ester, její charakteristika z hlediska děje, prostředí a hlavních postav. Následuje kapitola popisující jednotlivá zpracování. Praktickou částí této práce je samotné srovnání knihy Ester s adaptacemi, a to hlavně z hlediska děje a hlavních postav. V příloze lze nalézt jak filmové plakáty k jednotlivým verzím, tak obsazení filmů a další informace. V této práci byla použita především metoda komparativní analýzy, založená na srovnávání dvou a více děl. Dále je použita metoda kompilace, založená na shromažďování jednotlivých informací. Přínosem této práce je zodpovězení otázky, zda je možné filmy považovat za rovnocenné s původní knihou Ester. V rámci této práce jsem dospěla k závěru, že za rovnocennou můžeme považovat pouze adaptaci z roku 1999 (Esther), jež se s biblickou knihou podobá nejvíce.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to make a comparative analysis of the biblical Book of Esther with its film adaptations from years 1960 (Esther and King), 1999 (Esther), 2006 (One Night with the King) and 2013 (The Book of Esther). The analysis shows the main differences and similarities of the individual versions and the original book. The work is divided into several parts. In the introduction is described Book of Esther, its characteristics, the story, the background and the main characters. Following chapter describes individual adaptations. The practical part of this work is the comparison of Book of Esther and its adaptations, mainly from the aspect of the story and the main characters. Appendixes include movie posters for individual versions, cast and other information. In this work is used a method of comparative analysis based on the comparison of two or more works. Then is used a method of compilation based on the collection of individual information. The contribution of this work is the answer to the question whether the films can be considered equivalent to the original Book of Esther. In this work I find out that only the adaptation from 1999 (Esther) is the most similar and can be considered as equivalent.
